I have this fear that Pool will lose again in this CL final. The pressure is on Pool to deliver it this time unlike Spurs who has no pressure. The 3 weeks break before the game on 01Jun will also break Pool's winning momentum.

We have a much more matured team now and the solid defense is very admired by other clubs. Our midfield, strike force and backup players are also better equipped than before.

Spurs are a good team and we will have to deal with some very skillful players like Son, Lucas, Kane etc. I'm sure Poc is wary of Pool's attacking style.

It will be a tough match in Madrid...... Pool only managed to beat Spurs 2-1 by a late lucky goal in the EPL...... hopefully Lady Luck will favour Pool again in this game.

Let the front three off the leash right from the start. They'll expect our full backs high up right away and Poch will plan for that. Keep switching the points of attack. Get Henderson to run himself into the ground joining the attack and bring on Milner or the Ox(provided he is match fit & sharp) on 60 mins.

Fire in the belly from start to finish, with ice-cold clinical thinking in their penalty box and we've got this.

Liverpool to tie duo down to new contracts after Champions League final

Liverpool duo James Milner and Joel Matip are reportedly set to earn new contracts at the club after the Champions League final this weekend.

The Reds take on Tottenham in Madrid and that will no doubt be their sole focus for the moment, but there’s also good news regarding the futures of two key players.

According to the Telegraph, Milner and Matip are now set to be rewarded for their fine form this season with new deals at Anfield.

The report explains that Milner’s contract should be extended until 2021, despite his age, with Jurgen Klopp valuing the experienced former England international highly.

Matip also has a year to run on his current deal and looks set to earn an extension after his remarkable improvement this season.

Having started the season behind both Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren in the pecking order to partner Virgil van Dijk, the Cameroonian has now surely established himself as one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet.

The 27-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of next season and there’s no doubt LFC could do with keeping him around for the long run.

Matip was a solid performer at previous club Schalke, and he’s now seemingly fully adjusted to Premier League football after taking some time to settle.

Breaking news! LFC have offered Jurgen Klopp a new 10 million a year long term contract after he took the club back to the pinnacle of European football.

enough money for Klopp big contract extension

Revealed: LFC’s prize money for winning the Champions League

Liverpool were crowned Champions of Europe last night in Madrid following a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

It’s not the first thing you think of, but the football club is a business venture for our passionate owners and the prize money is a definite bonus.

Goals by Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi have delivered the Reds their sixth Champions League title – with number five now being 14 years ago.

So, how much will the club earn from lifting ol’ big ears?

Simply put – £17million. This figure is added to what the club have already earned by getting to the final in Madrid in the first place.

That figure then rises to around £66million from the Anfield to the Spanish capital. It’s hardly a figure to stick your nose up at.

Champions League sides share a prize fund of £1.7billion. The group stage is worth around £13million, with performance bonuses also paid out for each match that is won or lost.

For just reaching the final, both Spurs and Liverpool already guaranteed a nice £13million windfall.

It’s worth noting that these figures do not include anything made from television rights. If we’re to add this then the Reds have earned a whopping £98million from partaking in the Champions League this season.

Cashback!

Too many good players and only 11 players can start. Not sure how many willing to be bench players. Son may not start in most games. However we need good bench players to come in to score goals when we need to win games.

Klopp promised to promote him to first team in the new campaign. Sure he will take his chances from the bench.

I am sure many great players now wanted to join Liverpool but Klopp have to decide carefully how he wants to play which system.

Klopp started 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Hopefully with the right players, he can play another system.

Sturridge and Moreno will probably leave given their limited playing time

Milner joined on a free transfer and has at least 1-2 more seasons of top flight football, and could cover for Robertson at left back should Moreno leave.

Shaqiri should stay if we are to compete for more trophies (FA Cup, League Cup) and given more playing time.

Lovren will know that he is down the order behind Joe Gomez, so his playing time is limited as well. He could be used similarly like Shaqiri. But if a good offer comes for Lovren I'm sure we will sell.

Football: 'I want to see Klopp at Bayern,' says Beckenbauer

BERLIN: German football legend Franz Beckenbauer said on Monday (Jun 3) that he wants to see Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp in the Bayern Munich dugout.

As Germany celebrated Klopp's success in last Saturday's Champions League final, Beckenbauer told Bild newspaper that he was desperate to see the former Dortmund coach join Bundesliga champions Bayern.

"I want nothing more than to see Klopp come to Bayern one day, it would be a good fit," said the 73-year-old, who won five German titles with Bayern as a player and a coach.

Klopp's first Champions League title was met with widespread celebration in the German sports media.

On Monday, Kicker magazine carried the headline "King Klopp" on its front page, and described the Liverpool manager as "the face of German football".

Beckenbauer echoed those sentiments in an interview with Bild, calling Klopp "one of the best coaches in the world".

"Juergen brought a new type of football to Germany... what he began in Dortmund, he has refined in Liverpool."

Liverpool are reportedly looking to extend Klopp's contract, which currently runs until 2022.

Yet Beckenbauer questioned whether 51-year-old would stay on Merseyside in the long term.

"I think that a job in England robs you of energy. As a manager in the Premier League, you have more responsibility than as a coach in the Bundesliga," he told Bild.

"With the two cup competitions and the slightly larger league, the amount of games is considerably higher than it is in Germany."

Lovren has to stay cos Gomez n Matip are very injury prone.. I do hope Clyne comes back to Pool to rotate the Rb position with Taa..

Lovren should go while he still has resale value....... keep him for another season and his value become zero.

Bring in upcoming young talent the Ajax captain De Ligt..... he has hinted he would like to play together with his countryman Van Djik.
I believe with him and VD..... we will have the best CB pairing in the world.

Jurgen Klopp sends special message to departing Liverpool duo Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno

Reds boss issues tribute as pair handed free transfers after Champions League final glory.

Jurgen Klopp has paid a heartfelt tribute to outgoing Liverpool duo Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno as he told them: “You leave as European champions.”

The Reds have confirmed that both players will depart as free agents when their contracts expire this summer.

Striker Sturridge scored 67 goals in 160 matches during his six-and-a-half years with the Reds, while left-back Moreno netted three times in 141 appearances over five years.

Klopp told liverpoolfc.com: “The most important words to say to these two remarkable players is ‘thank you’.

“They were here when I arrived as manager and during that period they helped to establish us as a team that would be heading in the right direction. Without them we wouldn’t be the team and club we are in this moment.

“I wish both players nothing but success and joy wherever their journey takes them next. Whoever has them next will be so lucky to have these outstanding personalities in their ranks.

“We will miss them of course, but we can say farewell with the best words possible: guys, you leave as European champions.”

Sturridge proved a huge hit at Anfield following his £12million move from Chelsea in January 2013.

The 29-year-old frontman enjoyed a stunning start to his Liverpool career as he scored 24 goals playing alongside Luis Suarez in the title challenge of 2013/14.

However, his progress was then dogged by injuries and during Klopp's reign he slipped down the pecking order.

Sturridge spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom before working tirelessly last summer to force his way back into the manager's plans.

He started eight matches and made a further 19 substitute outings over the course of this season. His last goal for the Reds was his stunning late equaliser at Stamford Bridge back in September.

“Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think,” Klopp said.

“He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important.

“He is one of the best finishers I have ever seen in my life. He scores goals you think could and should not be possible.

“Again, like many players in my squad, Daniel has had to be patient and contribute when asked during games, but even this season he has played a vital role.

“What maybe is missed on the outside of the club by many is what a great leader Daniel is in our dressing room. He is smart, confident and not afraid to speak up when he thinks there is something that needs adapting to help the team.

“He has been great with many of the younger players also so he has been so important to our progression here.”

Moreno cost Liverpool £12million from Sevilla in the summer of 2014.

The Spanish full-back was the Reds' first-choice left-back for two seasons but lost that status after a nightmare display in the 2016 Europa League final.

James Milner took his place as a makeshift left-back for the 2016/17 season before the Reds bought Andy Robertson in the summer of 2017.

As Robertson adjusted to his new surroundings, Moreno enjoyed a mini revival of sorts but after he was sidelined by injury, Robertson replaced him and never looked back. Moreno only started four matches over the course of this season and his last appearance for January's FA Cup defeat to Wolves.

Klopp said: “Alberto is a person whose personality is reflected in how he plays. Full of life, full of energy, always positive.

“An unbelievable character who is always willing to give all of himself for the team.

“I know this season, and the end of the last, maybe the minutes on the pitch he would have wanted and deserved were not there, but his contribution did not diminish.

“How he was in training kept the entire group on their toes. Albie is world class and I know he will be back in the Spain national team in the not too distant future.”

I hope we sign 1 or 2 players who can challenge Mane and Salah. Both Mane and Salah will be heading for the african cup of nations now. Egypt is hosting the tournament. They will hardly get any rest before the start of next season. Both will not get a proper pre-season this time round.

When Klopp was singing let's talk about six, my first reaction was why is he singing about the 6 cup finals he lost? Is it because after winning the 7th cup final, no one else will ask him about him losing cup finals? :p

I get it that he is singing about our 6th European cup.

Klopp mentioned this is the "best ever" team he have managed even better than the Dortmund team he managed before because we are able to keep the team together and not loose good players after the season. This speaks volume about his faith for future seasons to come where Klopp will make it even better.

My biggest concern is most of our key players are playing too much (African Nations Cup, Nations League, South American Cup etc.) and not getting enough rest.

Liverpool confirm 9 summer departures along with contract offers to 5 youth players

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2019/06/liverpool-confirm-9-summer-departures-along-with-contract-offers-to-5-youth-players/

Liverpool have released their Premier League retained list, which confirms those who are departing the club this summer.

It was announced earlier in the week that senior duo Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno are leaving upon the expiration of their contracts, with Jurgen Klopp paying tribute to both players.

There will also be a clutch of Academy players departing the scene, as well as two players with first-team appearances to their name.

Goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, who signed in 2015, leaves after playing six senior games for the Reds. He spent 18/19 on loan at SPL side Hibs.

Connor Randall, who plays at right-back and in midfield, will also leave Liverpool, with eight appearances to his name.

Five players based at Kirkby who are leaving on free transfers are Juanma, Conor Masterson, Glen McAuley, Corey Whelan and Ben Williams.

None made a senior appearance, though centre-back Masterson was on the bench twice last season, against Everton in the league and Man City in Europe.

Furthermore, the club have offered contracts to five players who are without a senior game to their name: Bobby Adekanye, Daniel Atherton, George Johnston, Abdi Sharif and Edvard Tagseth.

Johnston played a friendly last summer for Jurgen Klopp‘s team, but it is expected that at least some may depart regardless of the offer of terms.

Lazio have been heavily linked with a move for Adekanye and the forward has already said his goodbyes to fans via social media.

However, the Reds offering him a contract means the Italian side would have to pay a fee to secure his registration for next season.

Tagseth looked a promising young talent under Steven Gerrard’s tutelage in the U18s, but struggled with injuries throughout 18/19.

Didn't Mourinho call Wenger a specialist in failure? Life can be so strange sometimes.

There are many types of goals scored at Anfield. Long distance shots, goals after a series of great passes, spectacular goals. Sometimes we can see a better version of a long distance goal/goal after great passes, spectacular goal...

but I think I will never see a better version of the 4th goal. How cunning that goal is :D and the icing on the cake is the opponent is a top team like Barcelona. I was watching it live and the goal did not really register in my mind until I watched the replay. Somehow in the back of my mind, I was waiting for the referee to wave off the goal for some reason (like must wait for his whistle etc). Awesome awesome awesome. Even today when I see the 4th goal, it's still unbelievable.

You should come read this thread more often. This thread has been around for almost 13 years. I always forgot who but someone here said something like you don't F around with liverpool in European football. Our league form may vary but once we play in Europe.. different team altogether.

We can change managers. The managers can change tactics on how our team play. But once European opponents come to Anfield and experience our loud European nights, many players panic and make silly mistakes. The Kop is special... Klopp has never lost a 2 legged tie as Liverpool manager. How special is that?

Actually buying Lovren makes sense for AC Milan. When you are rebuilding a team, you need players with experience to guide the younger players. Lovren has played in a World Cup final and a Champions League final (last year). AC Milan breached Financial Fair Play rules and needs to break even by 30th June 2021. The American owners need players who can help them go as far in European competitions as possible to maximise revenue over the next 2 seasons. Lovren is a ready made solution for the next 2-4 seasons. I remember reading his wages are on $100K pounds per week. Hopefully AC Milan can take his wages off us too.

Our scouting department may do very well with $25 million pounds. Matip played really well during the 2nd half of last season and he joined us on a free transfer. Maybe we can unearth another Matip.

Seldom will any player leave the club after bagging the CL trophy (CR7 is exception).

Salah may not get the kind of support from other managers and team mates like Klopp and Company. Coutinho is an excellent example. Salah himself at Chelsea is also example.

Salah will be a club legend if he can bring back the PL trophy in the new season.

The current worth of our squad players will deter many clubs and LFC is not short of money after bagging more than 250 million income in the PL and CL campaign. A new sponsorship deal for Liverpool attire would also bring in more sponsorship money for any world class sponsors to feed the hunger of LFC supporters world wide.

All in all, I would say Salah is pretty happy at Liverpool. What Liverpool management need to do is to give improved contracts to the players, and give new young players a shot at 1st team football.

This is exactly what is happening this summer. Klopp didn't wants to bring in expensive players in the transfer market to upset the current players.

Our youngsters are high on the list and willing to sit on bench to take thier chances.

Let's go for the PL holy grail.

Normally players will not leave after winning the European cup. Even Gerrard stayed after winning. They have the chance to win the World Club championship and be the World Champions. Now only European Champions.

How is Salah worth only $150 million pounds when Coutinho is $142 million pounds? Salah has 2 Golden Boots plus 1 PFA player of the year. Plus nowadays we track player value by social media outreach. His followers are plentiful. Whoever signs can command a higher advertisement revenue from their sponsors. We should only sell players who are in the 29-31 year old category.

Alisson's wife is really pretty. Most WAGs are quite pretty. Has anyone seen a player who does not have a pretty WAG? Even Brendan Rodgers divorced his normal looking wife. I read an interesting article which tracks Roma after selling Alission. They will not be playing in the Champions League next season as Alisson's replacement did not perform as well.

In separate news, Lucas won the Lazio player of the year again after Liverpool fans hijacked the online voting. 2nd year in the row. :D Player of the year award becomes popularity contest.

No one is going anywhere unless Klopp says so.

As for incoming, from what I have read emanating from the club, it looks like we are probably not going to be spending much unlike last season.

This time round Klopp seems to be going the organic growth way. No problem with this so longer as the youngsters are ready to make an impact when called upon. In particular Rhian Brewster, as we clearly need more effective influential substitute strikers to replace our fab front 3 whenever required.

As an aside, what concerns me most is that some of our key squad members are not going to get enough rest + enough vital pre-season training before the start of next season because of those stupid international tournaments in Brazil and Egypt. Not only that, there is also the other concern that they may get injured during those stupid tournaments.

To me this is a big worry, because of our high press style play and more games scheduled for next season. Also most of those players have not got a proper full rest now during the summer break period for the last two seasons because of WC18'.

It’s going to be a tough manage, particularly in the 2nd half of the season. Just hope the new winter EPL break shall help a bit at least. Also fingers crossed that none of our key squad members gets injured next season.

i'm still watching replays of the 2nd leg Liverpool vs Barcelona match.

I woke up at 3 am to watch even though chances of progressing are super low as we were trailing 3-0. Definitely exciting but by the time Origi scored the 4th goal, it was around 4.30 am (Singapore time). Lacking sleep, I couldn't understand what had happened for the 4th goal. I was expecting the referee to blow his whistle for a foul somewhere along the line. Had to watch the replay to see what went on. I will never see a similar goal in Liverpool.

Did you see how Robertson played mind games with Messi? He messed up Messi's hair as he lay sitting on the floor. Messi was so angry he complained to the referee about that. What does Messi want the referee to do? Lend him a comb? After that Messi was thinking more about how to get back at Robertson and lost his focus. Barcelona players are quite mentally weak. They sort of gave up when we scored the 2nd goal. 3-2 in their favour but they seemed to surrender after that.

Recently there was an interview with Neil Ruddock about his career. He spoke about his time as a central defender for Liverpool. Most of us know Cantona plays with his collar up. Neil Ruddock said he purposely adjusted Cantona's collar and put it down. :D Mind games lah but it worked.

A bargain buy in my opinion. 2 young dutch centerbacks Sepp & Jan with mentor VVD

The record-breaking rise of Sepp van den Berg – Liverpool’s next Joe Gomez.

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2019/06/the-record-breaking-rise-of-sepp-van-den-berg-liverpools-next-joe-gomez/

https://www.thisisanfield.com/wp-content/uploads/PA-41938600-copy-600x402.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqq6Sz-f57w

Liverpool are set to complete the signing of Dutch centre-back Sepp van den Berg this summer, with the record-breaking teenager another shrewd acquisition.

Less than a month after joining first-team training for the first time, Ki-Jana Hoever became the Reds’ third-youngest debutant, coming off the bench in the FA Cup defeat to Wolves in January.

It capped an impressive surge through the ranks since his arrival from Ajax the previous summer, making his under-18s bow in September, then with the under-19s in October and onto the under-23s in November.

Back in Hoever’s native Netherlands, a year prior, Van den Berg had experienced a similar rise, but a less demanding environment provided him more of an opening.

At the beginning of 2018, the teenager was named PEC Zwolle’s Youth Player of the Month for December; in February, he signed a two-year professional contract with the Eredivisie side.

“A step-by-step plan has been drawn up together with Sepp,” Zwolle technical director Gerard Nijkamp explained.

“Part of this step-by-step plan is connecting the player to the club so that he can develop further here. The overarching goal is to train boys from our own football academy for the first team.”

A month later, a 16-year-old Van den Berg made his debut for the senior side, replacing Erik Bakker at half-time with Zwolle 1-0 down to FC Groningen in March, 2018.

Van den Berg looked to have grasped the pace of the game well, but was powerless to prevent Zwolle conceding a second goal through Ajdin Hrustic on the way to a 2-0 defeat, also picking up a yellow card for a foul in stoppage time.

Despite the loss, it was a milestone afternoon for the teenager, and the club’s “step-by-step plan” saw him start in five of the final seven games of the 2017/18 Eredivisie campaign.

This included a man-of-the-match performance in the 2-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam in only his third appearance, which also earned him a place in the Dutch top flight’s Team of the Week:

By September, Van den Berg had made history, as the youngest-ever player to play at least 10 games in the Eredivisie, breaking Clarence Seedorf’s record at 16 years and 256 days.

He remained a regular part of the Zwolle first team throughout 2018/19, making 15 more appearances in the league including 10 starts, though his opportunities dried up following the appointment of Jaap Stam in December.

Stam, one of the Premier League‘s greatest-ever centre-backs, preferred the pairing of Thomas Lam and Bram van Polen, but Van den Berg still kept a place on the substitutes’ bench.

At 17, the defender has already made 22 Eredivisie appearances, and it is therefore no wonder the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven are interested.

Van den Berg began his youth career as a right winger, owing to his considerable pace, but later dropped into right-back and, eventually, across to centre-back.

His speed in the recovery is still a big part of his game, while his ability to read the play allows him to step out of defence and quell danger before it mounts.

Standing at 6’2″, he is also blessed with the frame of a leading centre-back, though given he won’t turn 18 until December, like Hoever he still has a lot of work to do in the gym.

Unsurprising due to his upbringing, Van den Berg is also comfortable in possession, and is able to push play forward with both long and short passes.

He registered Zwolle’s second-highest passing accuracy (270+ minutes) last season, at 88.4 percent.

According to football writer Jan Riha (@HonzaRihaftbl), however, he “has really awkward balance at times” and “looked to struggle fitness-wise later in games,” but this will likely come with age and experience.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is Van den Berg’s maturity; the Dutchman is able to speak English to a strong standard, but crystallised his approach perfectly in an interview in his native tongue in June of last year.

“I can be extremely critical of myself. When I was younger, it could really get in the way. If I had a bad moment in the game, I sometimes wanted to let my head hang,” he told Voetbal International.

“That is now much better. I do think that a sportsman should always want better. I think that’s the ultimate way to succeed.”

The teenager, who came up against Robin van Persie in only his second game as a senior player against Feyenoord, also showcased a much-needed confidence.

“I am fairly calm, not the type who is concerned with an opponent in the tunnel,” he explained.

“The only thing I can do is play my own game. When I enter a duel, it doesn’t matter if the opponent plays for Volendam Onder-19 or is called Robin van Persie.

“You just have to win all your duels. Names don’t count.”

For Liverpool fans, of course, names do count in the transfer market, and Van den Berg’s is the most high-profile of a quiet summer so far.

The club are expected to unveil the 17-year-old as their first ‘major’ signing of the summer later this week, beating Bayern, Ajax, PSV and Sampdoria to a deal worth around £2 million.

He will join the Reds’ academy ranks initially, which is apt following the departures of Corey Whelan, Conor Masterson, Juanma, Patrik Raitanen and possibly George Johnston.

This raises the possibility of Van den Berg and Hoever partnering each other for the under-23s, but it likely won’t be long until both are emerging from the fringes of the first team.

According to Goal‘s Neil Jones, Liverpool’s head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter are “confident” Van den Berg “is at a similar level to [Joe] Gomez four years ago.”

Gomez arrived for a fee of £3.5 million in 2015 having made 24 appearances for Charlton, and though injuries have blighted his four years at Anfield so far, he has shown world-class potential as a first-team centre-back.

It would be remiss to put similar expectations on Van den Berg, but he joins with similar experience to Gomez, who was 18 when he made the switch and, like the Dutchman, was an under-19 international able to play right-back and centre-back.

Van den Berg will be part of another shakeup of the club’s youth setup this summer, following Polish goalkeeper Jakub Ojrzynski and Northern Irish midfielder Conor Bradley to the club.

But his move is understandably receiving the most fanfare, as Liverpool may just have secured another bargain.

Final game of the group stage against Napoli at Anfield.

2nd leg of the last 16 tie against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

And naturally the...

Return leg of the Semifinal tie against Barcelona at Anfield.

No doubt the Final itself was vital but this was just a result oriented match.

Would also like to add that just from the above 4 matches, our GK Alisson deserves much more praise and credit than he got.

Groan, ok bro, I hear you!

Three things I hope Klopp can think about and implement before 19/20 season starts:

1. An effective Plan B if the match is not going our way. Perhaps make impact substitutions earlier as well.

2. Encourage the players to shoot for goal from outside the box more often, especially our AMs and front 3.

3. No doubt we now have a strong defence, but I think we can still improve defending set pieces and corner kicks.

Noticed in the past when Liverpool almost clinch the title and ended up runners-up, the following season, Liverpool lost a star player. Then Liverpool cannot replace the player. Now this new season, hopefully all the stars remain and challenged for silverware.

Hopefully MC goes shopping and bought more expensive players to upset the existing stars. He let go the Captain Kompany who is cheap and now goes shopping for > 50m centre-back. Dun forget they are investigated for FFP.

Klopp very shrewd not to upset the balance of the team.

Actually it is great news for us. If they breach FFP and get banned, then they must work hard to balance the figures. If they get banned in Europe and has zero Champions League money, then they need to sell more players to balance the books. Right now, they have a strong starting 11. Given how inconsistent Spurs and Chelsea were least season, even the Man City reserve 11 may possibly qualify for Champions League in the EPL. That is quite unfair if their squad strength is due to financial doping.

I do not think we need to panic.
We knew Man City will splash the cash every season and United are in trouble after another poor season.
Chelsea is in chaos as usual and with Lampard onboard he will need time.
I'm not worried about Arsenal or Tottenham because I think their goal is stability.
Probably another 1 or 2 signing as we have a very compact squad and they work well.
On the short term I hope we win the Super Cup and Club Fifa World Cup.

Inter Milan also hunting for him.

I'll just leave this here.

Make of it what you will with respect to whether we are going to purchase a marquee player in this summer transfer window;)

“If Ox can stay fit – new player for us,” the boss told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Rhian the same; he is a really big talent. We’re really looking forward to seeing him in training and all that stuff. It will be an important role for us, we planned an important role for him. So, new player.

“Like Joe Gomez is pretty much a new player. Adam Lallana, new player. After a lot of problems last year, if these boys can really stay fit then that’s completely different to last year for the team because there is real quality. That’s cool.”

Oh yes, not forgetting another 'new' player in Naby Keita as well!

Liverpool have made signing Lille's Nicolas Pepe their No 1 priority in the summer transfer window.

Is he good?

Good in one league does not necessarily mean he can succeed in the BPL. The French league is more technical & flowing artistry type of football rather than the rough and physical style of the BPL. But if he can withstand the physicality of the BPL.... we have a potential "Thierry Henry". :D He is fast, strong in the air, can score with both feet and dribbles well.

However if Liverpool does buy him.... I forsee 1 of the following will have to leave.

M Salah
S Mane
R Firmino
B Woodward
R Brewster
A Lallana
X Shaqiri
D Origi
A Chamberlain

My guess is Lallana as his body is constitutionally too weak for Liverpool's high tempo style of play...... thus high risk of injuries occuring again & again.

Neil Humphreys: Juergen Klopp needs to go shopping

European champions Liverpool look weak and weary, just a month before start of new season.

Neil Humphreys

COMMENT
Jul 11, 2019

Liverpool are a five-a-side team away from where they need to be in a month.

Imagine Alisson in goal, an attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah with Xherdan Shaqiri floating just behind.

Juergen Klopp can't, not for the foreseeable future.

All five are not with the rest of the squad for pre-season training. All five should give the German pause for thought.

With about a month to go before the new season kicks off on Aug 10, he's four superstars and a mercurial maverick short of a flying start to the campaign.

Title dreams are usually made of sterner stuff.

Klopp exudes self-confidence like Tony Stark in a tin can, but he can't assemble those who seek to avenge Manchester City's one-point triumph.

While he continues to emphasise his good fortune for having such a talented squad, he can't draw attention away from the threadbare nature of that squad.

Firmino and Alisson were last seen partying at the Copa America, following Brazil's tournament success. They are a three-week vacation away from returning to full training in Liverpool.

Mane's Senegal faced Benin in the African Nations Cup quarter-finals this morning (Singapore time). Like the Brazilian duo, he isn't expected to feature in Liverpool's pre-season American tour.

After Egypt crashed out, Salah might put in a brief appearance, presumably to appease American sponsors, but a pre-season cameo isn't coming anytime soon.

And on Tuesday, Klopp confirmed that Shaqiri's calf tear, picked up during last month's Nations League Finals, hasn't healed. Liverpool's medical team haven't offered a recovery date.

The Swiss midfielder was hardly omnipresent in Liverpool's late charge for English Premier League and Champions League honours, but he offers handy cover for Salah, Mane, and even Firmino, in a rotated attack.

All three are out, along with Shaqiri, which raises a slight concern for a club who were optimistic enough to release Daniel Sturridge and sign no one beyond teenage defender Sepp van den Berg.

Liverpool have sold or released five squad members and lost four attackers to either injury or post-tournament fatigue.

In the giddy euphoria of Champions League success, Klopp offered variations on not fixing what isn't broken.

The Reds aren't broken, obviously. But they are fragile and will remain vulnerable until late August at the earliest.

BENIGN AUGUST FIXTURES
Apart from Arsenal's trip to Anfield and the Uefa Super Cup clash with Chelsea, the Reds' fixtures are relatively benign next month.

But they recorded the third-highest points tally in history - 97 - and still finished second.

The tortoise and the hare analogy no longer applies. It's Manchester City's Roadrunner and the rest. A slow start and the EPL title race will be essentially over before it's begun.

Klopp has beamed with characteristic positivity, focusing on his teenagers and glossing over the fact that only 16 players kicked off pre-season training.

He is insisting that the kids are all right.

Rhian Brewster won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017, collecting the Golden Boot along the way. After wrapping the striker in bubble wrap for two years, Klopp seems ready to unleash the 19-year-old's raw power and speed.

The Reds consider Brewster to be the long-term successor to Sturridge, which is quite a leap of faith. Brewster hasn't made a single senior appearance yet.

At Manchester City, Phil Foden is a month younger than Brewster, but made 13 EPL appearances last season and qualified for an EPL winners' medal.

Unless the Reds take a sudden plunge into the transfer market, they'll be pinning their temporary hopes on the untested.

At least their forgotten man returns to the fore.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has recovered from cruciate ligament surgery and effectively becomes a new signing, and a most welcome one.

Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner offered tireless industry, but the defining difference between Liverpool and City was the sort of inventive wing play that defines Oxlade-Chamberlain's game.

RUSTY WINGER
But a rusty winger can't compensate for a missing trio up front, much less the Reds' standout goalkeeper (Alisson was the literal difference between Champions League success and failure in the last two seasons).

Philippe Coutinho has been mentioned, but a romantic return seems to be the work of speculative journalists rather than Barcelona board members, who need the Brazilian as a makeweight in a deal with Paris Saint-Germain for Neymar.

Klopp's confidence remains unshakeable, but he must be wondering if he can close the gap on a stronger City when four of his attackers will have a compromised pre-season preparation.

While his stars enjoy their vacations, he might consider doing what most wealthy folks do on their holidays.

Go shopping.

how any new players coming in to unseat Firmino, Salah and Mane...need backup but not starting 11...so no big name player will seat down to wait...:)

If somebody cheap comes along am sure Klopp will sign...preferably let Wilson, Brewster, etc hv a go...:)

Well my own pov is as follows...

If say a Dembele or Sancho...becomes a feasible option for transfer I would like to think we'd make it happen or look to make it happen, it should go without saying. What Klopp should not do is go and buy say a back up left back for £20m who'll sit on the bench as much as Moreno, what is the point? In case Andy Robertson breaks his leg? Nah, that just doesn't cut the mustard for me. Especially when we have versatile players who can play them positions anyway to a standard that won't hurt our game short term.

What I'd like though, is another inside forward at the club but this player has to be at levels of Salah and Mane or at least has the potential to hit them levels, like the 2 players I mentioned or again what is the point? Its just wasting money to buy a £30/40m player on 100k a week wages to sit on the bench for 75% season and probably isn't any better than the likes of Brewster(hopefully he shall make a big impact in 19/20), Origi(who I gather has just signed another contract and hopefully returns to pre Funes Mori injury budding top form), Shaqiri.

We are a different animal in the transfer market now and hopefully we won't be repeating the mistakes of years gone by. The board, management, coaching, recruitment staff are all top notch at this club and now you have the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd scratching their heads how we are so so far ahead of them despite largely having the same resources if not slightly inferior resources over the past 5 years.

He may have regretted leaving us last season. After he left, TAA was injured and we had to play Henderson and Milner at right back because Joe Gomez was injured as well. Clyne could have played many games for us. He also could have won the Champions League with us.

Contrast Clyne's reluctance and Moreno's willingness to stay on the bench and fight for his place. Moreno left us on good terms with a Champion's League medal. I think he must have regretted leaving. Other teams may not be willing to match what we are paying him too. He will be better off with us seeing his last year out and then get a sign on bonus from whichever team he is joining. He can leave us as a World Champion if we win the World Club Championship.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, apart from Brewster and maybe Sepp van den Berg and Ki Hoever, I don't think we shall be seeing any of the other youngsters playing competitive games for us this season. The rest shall either go out on loan or remain with the under 23/reserve squad.

I also agree with bro francined69 on the immense effect of the Klopp factor. Been watching the recent preseason inside training squad videos(particularly the 1st day back at Melwood) and the post match Barca and Spurs UCL videos. The genuine love and affection felt by Klopp and his players towards each other is very real and palpable, so too Klopp with the Liverpool staff and the fans. Gave me goosebumps watching this:D

Actually I think the correct question to ask is whether we need to sign any more players to seriously challenge for the EPL once again and also try to retain the CL?

Do we finally break our sad history of failing to consistently challenge for the EPL after previously coming in second?

Not forgetting that we are now probably in the best position to attract any players we want, because: we are CL winners; our finances are strong; and we have a world class manager.

So is this an opportunity missed?

Shaqiri was carrying a groin injury that was why he went MIA towards the 2nd half of last season.

Lallana, Ox, Clyne and Keita are made of toufu and cannot withstand the rigourous BPL thus are injury prone..... I agree JK should get reinforcement for them.

JK should also bring in another LB as cover now that Moreno is gone.... cannot always ask Milner to cover as he is more useful in midfield role.

Alternatively, since we have an abundance of attackers with Brewster & Origi coming in..... JK can convert Mane into LB/RB as he is quite good at defending too.

Lastly, I am concern that JK intend to include 17 yr old new signing Van Der Berg into the 1st team.... we all thought he was signed for the Academy team. Is he really that good?

Don't really care about the results of preseason.

Concerned by how open we look though and how easily teams are getting in behind us.

We are conceding far too many goals. There is an excuse that the forwards are out but does Alisson make 'that' much of a difference to our backline because he is the only first-choice player missing from our defense.

As for our attack, we appear to have 3 types of forwards: Flair, Tricky and Passive. We're currently without 2 Flair and 1 Tricky.

What do you class players like Hendo Gini Milner Ox Lallana and Origi? All passive.

And Jürgen Klopp has been boosted by the involvement of Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri in Evian.

Much much better and it needed to be:D

Credit where it’s due, lots of good performances, controlling and creative, cute passes and delicate dribbles. Stunning goal from Wilson who surely has to stay if we are not buying anyone. Lallana did well and read the game well. Shaq was industrious, Keita looked remarkably sharp and made some excellent movements on and off the ball. Mo and Firmino looked understandably rusty but showed glimpses of pure class also. Hoever showed why he is rated highly, tenacious and always willing Larouci similarly on the left , always offering. And Harvey Elliott despite the dodgy haircut :p shows again why he’s so highly rated, 16 and plays like a seasoned pro unlucky not to score:cool:

Onward to hopefully a good game against City on Sunday. This performance against Lyon will hopefully put a much needed spring in our step:)

Harry Wilson impressive strike from outside of penalty box. Had been years Liverpool had a player who can strike from distance.

Interesting article and not sure if true.

At one glance at a certain angle, Wilson looks like Tores...:p
Pom's perception only lah

Quite a common perception. I think he can easily replace Lallana when Lallana's contract end after this season.

Liverpool cut down to 24-man training squad as Community Shield draws closer

Sepp van den Berg, Ki-Jana Hoever, Yasser Larouci, Adam Lewis and Bobby Duncan all featured in that clash, but have now all returned home as Klopp streamlines his group.

The quintet can be called up and fielded anytime necessary.

I don't think it is true.

If you follow what FSG and Klopp had been saying through out the summer, it is quite clear that no marquee signing was on the list for this transfer window.

Klopp may well have wanted a marquee signing(not necessarily Pepe) , I mean who wouldn't right, but I suspect FSG told him this coming season is time to consolidate instead.

Hopefully this decision does not come back to bite them in the bum.

Very interesting, thanks for the info:)

So looks like Wilson is more likely to be staying than going to Bournemouth and young Elliott's star is indeed on the rise:cool:

Quite sad though, as Melwood has a lot great rich history, just like The Boot Room.

Well, could and should have won. Although City could and should have gone 2-0 when Sterling was clean through.

Performance in 2nd half was so much better though and we were the better side in that period.

Wonder what the possession stats were like in the second half. Was like we owned the ball!
Keita came on and actually had a positive effect. that bodes well. Hopefully Keita will establish himself in our midfield this season.

I thought Fabinho did well too. Can't wait for Mane to return but seriously think we need to buy another pacey winger, unless Liverpool feel super young Harvey Elliott is ready.

Anyways, disappointed to lose on pens, but promising performance after lacklustre 1st half.

The real work starts on Friday, bring on Norwich!

I thought Liverpool have nabbed it in the final seconds of injury time but Walker cleared off the line.

Salah easily had 10 chances last night but his finishing was very poor!
Even though it was only a Charity Shield match, the feeling still sucks losing to Mcity n it was again on penalties!

disappointed not to win the game in the 2nd half. we need to do better finishing off the chances.

will be another test against Chelsea in the Super Cup.

Liverpool completed West Ham goalkeeper Adrain.

Bye Simon Mignolet.

Well here we start the campaign with all players in-tact. Mane is back at Melwood.

very smart business to sign Adrian on a free transfer, and he will be a very good backup keeper for Pool.

Adrian has featured for Spain in some international games.

Going by all the latest reports coming out with respect to the EPL summer transfer window, I am getting concerned to say the least:eek:

Also just heard Harry Wilson has been sent out on loan to Bournemouth:(

Really hope our summer transfer policy does not come back to hurt us.

In reality, Pool has not strengthened the squad @all for this coming season. It has weakened in fact. Sturridge n Moreno left n there's no proper replacement for them. And if either full back gets injured, there's no back up for them. Can't always be relying on Milner!

Klopp kept the team together and reward the stars with contract extensions and bigger paychecks weekly.

Fullback hv the youngster Larruci to backup on left back and right back is Joe Gomez. Hoover also can play the position.

I dun think Sturridge and Moreno departure had weakened the team. Both hardly contribute. Sturridge played in Barcelona comeback win and not make impact.

Origi was rewarded with a improved contract and thus save Liverpool plenty of cash in transfer.

Our bench dun look weak, we hv Shaqiri, Ox, Keita, Origi, Brewster to come on.

Yeah, Liverppol had blundered earlier on with signing up Balotelli and even Benteke, what a waste of transfer funds on them.

Even Manure are facing rubbish like Sanchez ;)

So far Klopp had been wise in signing players and even selling them wisely too

I also agreed with trusting Klopp.

So far he has not failed to deliver.

He did say in the press conference that existing players are proven and they are not old players.

Definitely no need to go panic buying.

Nicolas Pepe chose not to sign because no guarantee first team and also not proven in PL already cost £72mil.

Chelsea banned from transfer.

Manure need to buy but none of the players are impressive. Lukaku is still a cancerous cell.

Arsenal bought forwards but no strong defence.

Man City also did not bought much and lost players.

Spurs making late purchases and hope to get Coutinho loan deal.

I think Liverpool has an advantage over most of the other teams - we have a proven team that works together and have a fantastic team spirit.
Just look at the cancerous situation with Pogba and Lukaku at Man U, Eriksen at Spurs.
So I think the only team to worry about is Man C. They have only lost Kompany and seem to have adequate replacement for him.

Probably need to worry about ever-present enemy, Everton. They have got some really good players this season..
Chelsea, Arsenal will not be up there..
My thoughts.
