since the move to new airport and beginning this year the airport tax has been included into all tickets that we buy. no more need to pay separately. makes life easier for us all too... remember the old days when we must keep 500tb to pay for tax.

hope this helps...
But tax is B700 now....unseen but still factor in....I jus bought SQ tickets travelling on the 6th....plus peak period & every kind of tax & surcharges...its S$430!!! :(

SQ's premium fare with catch of 2 to go (for better pricing). RT1099 got deep pockets :p

You will be surprised with what you can get on regular airlines (TG, CX and Swiss Air) for non peak periods. Range from 260-360 incl taxes. So differential (I've done it at lower range) from budget is not a bridge too far to cross -with trade offs eg better choice schedule, seat allocation (save for Jetstar), aerobridge (instead of bus for AirAsia), leg room, makan. For Dec period from boxing day departure and return Jan1 is nett 368 on TG, CX 376 (today on Zuji.com, may vary later). Kns, must make up my mind before the hordes come in.

You want I PM you the travel agency.....KNN after I booked the travel agent still tell me to pay upfront 1st if not price going to increase & she cannot guarrantee seats. Now I want to push forward 1 day change date to 5th also cannot she say my ticket special price (ya rite more expensive) ticket cannot change departure date WTF!!!

I also find come peak periods those budget airlines charge almost the same as regular airlines even. Trick is book early especially so for budget but the airlines outsmart you too coz got blackout dates. I travelling on the 6th they still charging me extra CCB....now I want to travel even earlier to avoid the crowd also cannot

IC, but normally these tickets timing is not too good. Probably the evening flight only... Tried it once, but fly ard 6pm. Cost ard 360sgd.

No point in booking early if schedule not fixed 3 months in advance.
My last trip I told myself not to take anymore Jetstar, but bo bian, its the only one with early morning flight. And it has the best timing to come back at 7plus evening, can late checkout from room.

Thai airways have morning flight, but early noon fly back.
Cathay have early noon flight, ticket price almost same same as jetstar.
SQ peak period very expensive and either can go early return early or go later return later.
Swiss air go late flight and actually waste 1 extra night of room stay.

Yes I guess sometimes it cant be help. I remember b4 there were budget airlines, many airlines were plying the SIN-BKK route daily, airlines like Finnair, KLM, Qantas, Biman, China Airlines, Royal Nepal (they had morning flights out of SIN which were a rarity as it was dominated by TG & SQ) & Air India which had the earliest flight out of BKK at 6.50am!!! The choices were mind boggling.....now it seems we have less to choose from :(

why all these happen?

They might be following the Thai pricing model: When demand drops, increase price to make-up for loss of profit. :P

Any ATM cards with the "Cirrus" or "Maestro" logo can be used overseas. It's the same as how you would withdraw cash locally. However, the exchange rate is dependent on the bank at the time of withdrawal and there is a fee imposed per transaction, which is also dependent on the bank itself

In AsiaPac, PLUS is more common / popular. Cirrus / Maestro is more commonly used in conjunction with Mastercard.

Money changers all over town. Probably can't go wrong with GM. Diff won't break your bank, unless you are changing a small fortune.

Anytime's a good time, depending on your needs and urgency etc. And if only we had the crystal ball, can be rich if we knew what tomorrow holds for thb:p

Kns, fuel surcharge also ++ now from high oil price development. Kinda high season now with school hols etc. TG's return fare next week at 358, similiar for xmas period. Even krisflyer points kena hit by expensive taxes/surcharges what not. So not really worthwhile to redeem for short haul krung thep sector. You can't win, it's all in the name of business

If you are unloading your big bucks, you can get closer to 33.5 than what the silly Bangkok Bank says at 1600 today. Link includes SGD, MYR etc. You shd get marginally better rates at smaller, less touristy joints:

You must have noticed the similiar rates between diff banks at bkk airport.

Takes a bit of looksee (no loss). Won't make u rich either, just feels good. For example, in busy Pratunam... the mom/pop kiosk on soi 19 (or 21?) is wee
bit better than shiny bank counter opposite corner.

No different from changing money at Orchard Rd malls against places in GM, Mustaffa etc.

Pls excuse me now, running late for 2 dates with 2 puyings (sequential order, none knows existence of other, else I'm done for!):p

23.08/23.24= 0.99

That's a 0.6% difference. Assuming you change 10K SGD. How much do you lose. A mere $60 SGD. And if you change 1k SGD, that's only $6.

A mere 0.6% change and someone call it a roller coaster ride??? this guy really risk averse sia....:D

the AUD/SGD exchange rate can change from 1.34 to 1.25 in a few days. That's about 6.7%. this is what i call roller coaster ride.

I just found out that UOB have certain cards(credit or debit) that allow overseas ATM withdrawal each month for 3 times without charging $5 admin fee. Thats pretty good deal.

**Waiver of commission charges for your first three international ATM withdrawals each month (the usual charge is S$5 per withdrawal)**

which cards from UOB?

Just checked with UOB, seems the only Debit Card with this feature is the Visa R Gold Card which carries an annual fee of 60.

http://www.uob.com.sg/pages/personal/cards/debit/uobvisaclassic.html

not worth it if you are not a frequent user. Think i still better off with the 5 dollar ad hoc withdrawal :)

Tis is what i found in d small booklet UOB sent me wif my Debit card...

"You can use your new UOB VISA Debit Card as an ATM card throughout
Singapore's huge shared ATM network. It also works in over 800,000
VISA/PLUS ATMs all over the world. The charge for international ATM
withdrawals is $5 per transaction. However,we will absorb this charge for your
first three international withdrawals made each month."

Wif tis statement,i tink it applies 2 all d Debit card..
Whether its VISA R Gold Card,VISA R Classic Card or VISA Electron,UOB will
still absorb d 1st 3 international withdrawals u make each month..

Hope tis might help....:)

Ok, thks for the info.
What is the rates they are charging for TT?
Coz for Bangkok Bank, they charge s$40 only inclusive of bank charges here and over there.
To enjoy better exchange rates, send your $$ over either in S$ or USD$ coz all these currency enjoy better rates over there.
The bank will automatically convert to thai baht.

All the remittance shops charges $10 or $12 except for Western Union which charge more for its express service.....for $12 you get a slightly better rate.....usually its THB10 more for every SGD100. Cut-off time on weekdays is b4 noon. That means if tt b4 noon, the Thai side will get the money 3-4pm same day dependant on public holidays in both countries. :)

Yingyang,

Thanks for your response. Are you the yingyang that will be traveling to Bangkok soon with Chanyboy? If you are, you'll be surprise of how much excitement and enjoyment we're going to have in Bangkok. During our last trip to Bangkok, I had severe knee pain due to torn meniscus, I couldn't travel that much but this time my knees are okay after surgery, so we're going to lots of places!

So, if you're the same yingyang, you better eat lots of beef!

Best rate I have seen in BKK so far and which is unmatched by any other banks or money changers in Singapore or BKK is from this money changer situated on sukhumvit soi 7/1. Door sign states XXX Travel Agency or something but dun worry they are an extremely large money changer in BKK and have been operating for the last 50+ years.

The entrance is at the side opp the subway restaurant. Do note one thing for this money changer, for SGD 50, they consider as small notes. SGD 1K note then they consider as large notes and for large notes, their exchange rates is really fantastic.

For example when I was there for business trip, ex-rate in Singapore was about 23.4, the ex-rate at the BKK money changer was about 23.42 but the ex-rate at this money changer was around 23.5 for small notes and 23.6 for large notes. I've had some instances whereby their ex-rate for large notes was 0.2+ higher than the best rate I could find at other money changers.

Forget changing in the SG airport or Bkk airport, the rate will be lower however, ChiangMai Int airport bank exchanges rate is higher than Bkk & SG airport. Try not to use credit card to settle the Plazzo hotel bill as the exchange rate from the bank is much lower, settle by cash. Hope it helps. Cheers.

ALL the shops charge the same service charge of 10 & 12 except for Western Union......the rates are also all identical across the board.....previously they had freebies (i know what you are thinking but the gifts were of hats, t-shirts & caps <pardon the pun again>)

I thought I will ask this question here since it is related to remittance.

I would like to open a bank account in LOS. Mabbe with Siam Commercial Bank? Any recommendations? Just bring the passport will do? Any other documentation required?

This will eventually be a bank account for me to remit money into. So which bank will you recommend?

Also for those booking for CNY 6-7FEB and 10-11FEB.
If the travel agency say full, you can try budget airline online booking.
When all fails... if you deperately want to fly to BKK, you can direct approach which ever airline to book a standby ticket. If some good soul no show on the day of travel, the airport check-in counter staff will callup all the standby passenger to fly, first come first serve.
yet another way buy business class if not first class LOL :D

anyways, if 1 branch cannot, just go to the next 1, try to avoid the touristy area branches.

i got mine opened at bangkok bank suttisan branch. went in with a certified copy of my pp, and was told no work permit, cant open. so i called customer service hotline and told them i wasnt allowed to open, but i needed a savings account etc and i have a certified copy of my passport, apparently a while later the same counter girl tt turned me down came back and said her manager gives the nod. so viola! out i came with a VISA card as well LOL

Maybe he wana send a million baht?:(

1 sgd = 23baht
1M baht = 43478 sgd

1 sgd = 22.9
1M baht = 43668 sgd

total lost for every 0.1 = 190 sgd

If its 1000 baht then aprox 0.19 sgd.

So if changing <10000 its not so significant but >10000 its starting to worth a meal in bkk.:p

well, if u trade securities, aka shares wif the brokerage firms in SGP, for sell + buy transaction (ie, short-sell & buy-back on same day), yr brokerage fees + tax for shares valuing around 20k SGD is oredi somewhere around SGD 150. Those with Share Borrowing & Lending (SBL) accounts lagi shiok!

Let's say u make a profit of 6% on yr short-sell (the regional stock markets' indices drop at different levels, somewhere between 4% to 8% every other day), for 3 counters of 20k SGD each, yr profit is around 3600 SGD a day. 3 X 150 SGD trading fees, yr trading fees is 450 SGD. So u still make 3150 SGD profit a day by short-selling 3 counters a day! If u play with penny stocks (most China shares are penny stocks!) & using SBL account, yr profit lagi happening!

Yr trading fees u oredi paying ard 450 - 480 SGD a day, based on 3 counters & 20k SGD per counter. What if it's 100k SGD per counter? Not to mention, yr profits if short-selling 100k SGD per counter? Many pple play more counters, at higher values too!

so what is 190 SGD difference in exchange rate difference for yr cheong in Thailand, not to mention, u still make 3+ k SGD a day (based on 3 counters, 20k SGD a counter a day) from shorting the stock market since end December 2007 until now?

This is totally 2 different matters and doesn't mean that if that person is exchanging that large amount of money means he is someone playing the stock market.

Bro, economists and politicians have short memories... with discretionary freedom to revise their forecasts. As for your concerns on currency development, your crystal ball is as clear as mine:p Quite a few variables come into play here. If you got some spare dough, you can always talk this over with experts (money traders) for position to take. Caveat: You could lose your pants or afford more than a new wardrobe. As for your other question on MPs/nite spots going to be shuttered and more FLs.. let's just put this to (healthy?) turnover. :D

Oh, so the blue-flim shareholder is back! Hail the DBSLand shareholder!

Since u are so good in digging up old discussions, arguments & threads, go dig up what I have posted during 2nd galf of 2006 & 1st half of 2007, especially in this thread regarding the economy & financial markets!

It just shows how much u know about economy & financial markets. It's all about timing. U can try shorting during bull markets, or try longing during bear markets. What & why do people call it a plan or ploy, if they don't plan, observe & execute at a more appropriate timing? By the way, if u compare the stock prices in Jan 2007 vs Jan 2008, even based on 29 Jan's closing prices, what is the difference / damage? A person won't die, neither will he be bankrupt if he shorts the market, even if he loses money shorting the market, especially SGP's market! If u know the "rules" of short-sell transactions in SGP in the 1st place. But a person can really bleed & lose big time speculating the conventional long-then-sell transactions, especially playing contra!!

Anyway, I be going to Bangkok this sunday.
Not sure to just change SG1k in spore,

Which is better, as i hear contradicting info.

SG$1k can be a difference of 1,000 bahts if the exchange rate is just 1 baht different. (1000 baht can be put to good "USE"!! haha )

Any useful info is appreciated.

i just returned from bkk and i can tell you, the difference is really insignificant between singapore and bkk. in fact, sometimes singapore is higher.

before i left singapore, peninsular plaza had the exchange rate 22.9 THB = S$1, when i arrived in bkk, the exchange rate was 22.65 THB = S$1. the rate fluctuates everyday between 22.5-22.65 THB.

my advice is that if like some people, you change a bit here in order to have some baht when you reach thailand, you might as well change all. if you are like me before i went bkk, you don't trust the words of forum members, then change half here, change half there. personally, i prefer to change locally because at least you feel safer. when i changed money in bkk, i keep worrying that somebody will be monitoring me and follow me in order to rob me after that. luckily i found a relatively low traffic money changer and i changed money there.

also another thing, try to bring all your money in SGD. drawing money in ATM is seriously not worth it, the exchange rate is much lower. i drew money from an atm and the exchange was only 22.1, while the prevailing rate was about 22.65. the difference is staggering.

The other UOB money exchange is a mobile one just below Nana BTS station between soi 7 and 9. Be prepared that they scrutinize yr $50 bill... quite ngeow, no markings/dirty etc. Think it's operates after sunset :)

Seem like the Sin$ is dropping fast against the baht...

no, seems that the central bank has released certain currency controls. enabling more foreign influx of investments etc. Expect the thai baht to climb against the US dollar and hence the sing$
