No, imho SG's rates better than LOS (check thread out). Unless you willing to leg it to Superich outlets Bkk (not even sure if their favourable rates are correct at counter). Not that you get rich with marginal diff, unless you into big time. And ATM rates sucks, not just with bank extras but lousy rates (banks margin) -can't beat them on forex profit center.

Assuming,

1) You bought a decent 1 rai land, in decent location and in a province
2) You built a decent brick house with car porch and garden
3) You bought decent furniture

The above will cost you at about 3-5 mil THB.

Questions,

1) You changed SGD to THB, how you transferred the money over to Thailand??
2) You know land cannot be owed by foreigner? In this case, the land and house and everything belongs to your so called tirak or wife?
3) What will happen when you and tirak or wife break up one fine day? 3-5 mil gone?

Guess you still dun get it or are prepare to throw the money into the drain.

Read this statement from a lawyer in Thailand,

"Even a well-constructed land lease and a separate option agreement to extend the lease between the landowner and the lessee cannot guarantee the timely renewal of the lease. A landowner may refuse to sign any registration for the lease extension beyond the 30-year expiration. Although the lessee can sue the landowner for breach of contract, the legal process entailed may be costly and time-consuming. "

After 30 yrs, if no agreement has reached, the owner of the house will have to demolish the house or give the house to the owner of the land. This is like throwing away mil of THB for 30 yrs of staying. Or in between 30 yrs, he and wife break up. He can't sell the house. He either stay in the house for 30 yrs or leave it vacant till 30 yrs as he can't sell the house as no one will want to buy the house without land. For both cases the owner of the land benefit from them.

But if the land belongs to the house owner then at least, he can sell away the house and land anytime and take the money back to SG to buy coffin. :D

But actually, i think you might still be able to setup an offshore co to buy and own the land + house. Get a lawyer to setup some thai names on the board of directors w/o any voting rights, blah blah blah......heard this is done for foreign inventments into real expensive houses in Thailand. Hey I think condo still the way to go cause as a foreigner we can put it under our name. But of course it a bit more expensive but we got the piece of mind cause under our name. My two cents worth - I visit BKK quite often, I generally find that changing money there is much better than in SG. In fact, even the changers at Suvarnabhumi airport can equal or better Arcade. Some more you have to pay for expensive parking just to visit Arcade.

There is a money changer at Chit Lom BTS station too, just after the fare gates in the direction towards Holiday Inn (concourse above street level). Gives rates that are about 1% better than the airport. Convenient if you are enroute to Zen mall.

Money changers at Swampy better than Arcade? Come on bro thats pushing the envelope. All banks in Swampy has the shittest rates! PERIOD! HANDS DOWN! Arcade. Golden Mile and that Ah Neh under the escalator at Peoples Park can beat all the fricking banking cartel at Swampy one had tied behind their backs ANYTIME!

BTW that SUPER RICH at Chidlom MRT doesn't have the best rates in Bangkok. Maybe a few days in a month but u cannot say they r the best... I've posted this many months ago... their neighbor 90% of the time triumphs them... PS... u also taking commission from the banks at Swampy ah? พี่ซูเปอร์สุดยอดครับ:rolleyes:

Terryraven
02-03-2012, 09:34 AM
Like i said, just my 2 cts worth. i go to BKK about once every mth. when i first started this last year, i always changed at the arcade first then ended up finding out rates at "swampy" were same or better. The Chidlom rates are definitely always better than "swampy".

Its not just THB. I've been let down by arcade for IDR, CNY, PHP etc in their respective countries.

To be fair, the difference is not big. unless you are changing lots of 'ks. Drive down to arcade + erp + parking will probably wipe out any savings assuming Arcade is better.

Anyway, thanks for the info. It's simple. Next week when I stop by Swampy, I will check the rates against Arcade anyway - if it's worse off, then I learn something and thank you very much. If it's better, it's something for you to think about.

Bang on (for my money). Terryraven, beg to differ on your asserting Bkk's rates better than Sg, especially Swampy.

It's a given that sanambins (airports) are worse places to change your dosh, in most destinations. Also, rule of thumb is marginally better rates from open, financial centre like SG (but Pesos defy this logic, reverse in exciting Philippines). Got to do with money market conditions.

All said, unless you got family fortune to change ..diff (for odd short trip, kopi money) may not be worthwhile. Of course, you can bet on horse by season parking your thb in local thai banks (if you got dough to spare).

Never quite sure of SuperRich, big notes or ..isn't this big opportunity
loss? Few timeS I spied SR stalls in BTS stations or mall, rates are just as bad as rest leh.

(IMO, you seem to let go in LOS thread today. That time of month, huh?:o

Terryraven
02-03-2012, 12:45 PM
Yeah time of the month coming up. Actually time last month and time this month only 2 weeks apart this time. So not always 28 days apart like the other "time". :D

Agreed that most airports are pretty bad, I find that the TH, PH and VN airports are ok though. As in when you go to the city you may find better rates but you won't feel you've been completely shafted. Changi is really bad though. but it's good for me. because when i do travel claims, i have to produce a changer receipt for expenses in foreign currencies. so......:D

that's why i always change $50 at changi haha.

anyway another destination i go to quite often is bali to chill. on the streets every 3rd shop is a changer and every other is a "changer" if you know what i mean. if you go to the "changer" you get to watch a game of shuffle-your-notes and god knows what you will get back.

nowadays i avoid those with counters that look like car-jockey ones. i go in, ask for big notes (IDR100k is only $14 anyway) only so its easier to count.

I agree with naemlo. It should be "by the way" type. I stop changing Thai baht at BKK International Airport, rate very low.:mad:

I will always call Golden Miles BKK Forex for the exchange rate before I go down. But if I dont going to remittance, I will go to the Indian stall between Grassland and 5 star travel agencies, he gave Best rate at GM.

Today BKK Forex @ 24.18, means the indian money changer u can get at least 24.30

Cause the "supply" is there while our stronger currency is a demand?

Interesting point. Do you also notice that in many places elsewhere in South East Asia, at a money changer, that they will generally give you more for your SGD then the BND (Brunei $)?

We know that the SGD and BND are legally interchangeable 1:1 in the two countries, yet if you go to say MBK in BKK, I've seen the changers offer say 24.xx for SGD and yet 23.xx for BND. They also offer less for the MYR.

Its not just THB. I've been let down by arcade for IDR, CNY, PHP etc in their respective countries.
A group of friends changed at Arcade 24.75 3 weeks ago. Bangkok Super Rich was 24.72 and Swampy cartel was 23.87 - all on the same day.

My own Rule of Thumb - go change your money at where their nationals working in Sillypore would normally change. So... THB = Golden Mile, IDR = City Plaza, CNY = People's Park, PHP = Lucky Plaza? Changed at all before except for PHP.

BIG TIP of THE DAY:
Are you using an smart phone? Now you can download an app that lets u know whats the daily rate for THB... go search "Super Rich Money Exchange"... use that to compare rates across the board. IMHO Super Rich rates are one of the best in Bangkok.

Today rate @ Ratchada & Siam Exchange - 24.30 bahts.
Depends on what you really mean by 'local' banks -Sg banks? Fair, right comparison is MC (money changers) here, then reverse holds true as this thread had consistently shown. Simple reason is local Sg banks do not bank too much on 'over the counter' currency exchange (handling, not big bucks) unlike trading or remittances (where the money is). Of course, there is the presence of forex kiosks in Changi (with rip off rates:p). Bkk's different with plenty bank MC presence all over town, due to big tourist market

Just on sun, GM was doing 24.30+

Nowadays it is hard to change large amounts og baht at the Singapore money changers. Most will let you change up to Sgd$500.00 at most.

I have found a better way to have my baht for cheonging. Citibank has very good exchange rates and since they do not charge any fees for overseas ATM withdrawal I just withdraw from the ATMs in LOS and let them convert at the favourable exchange rate. :D

So much more convenient than having to hunt for money changers.

I am expecting baht to go further south as a lot of companies are rebuilding after the flood and they are selling baht for other currencies to buy in the materials. Supply of baht is greater than demand and this will generally cause the currency to weaken further. Plus I think MAS have already announce that they will allow S$ to gradually appreciate, we may be looking at close to 25 one day. I hope.

Anyway, rates at Tanjong Pagar market 24.45, money changer beside bakery stall.

MAS stand on S$ holds up. But not necessarily post flood re-building sellout. Thai exports, FDI growing ..so influx capital, trade flows may up the thb. Well, it's outside we ikan bills control ..follow market rate;)
