Reputation: 2 ST reported today (30 Jul) that Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Hri Kumar Nair wants to step down from politics.

“Mr Nair, a two-term MP and senior counsel in a law firm, serves the Thomson-Toa Payoh ward. Activists said he has asked to leave politics,” ST reported.

“That will make him the third in the GRC to leave, along with former deputy prime minister Wong Kan Seng and former Central Singapore District mayor Zainudin Nordin,” it added.

It was further reported that Mr Chee Hong Tat was seen with MP Hri Kumar Nair and residents at a party on Saturday (25 Jul).

Mr Nair has been embroiled in some recent controversies occurring in The Peak@Toa Payoh, a DBSS development.

A dispute between the Residents’ Committee (RC) and residents at The Peak@Toa Payoh began last year when the RC wanted to build an RC centre at the void deck. Most of the residents objected to this. To begin with, the RC had already converted the key-collection area into an RC centre. It now wanted to build another RC centre with a bigger area at the void deck of block 139B.

Residents said they have been bullied by the RC and PA. Some residents then approached MP Nair on the issue and were advised to start a petition and get the residents to vote on the matter. The final results showed that the majority did not want to have the proposed RC centre at the void deck.

But the RC went ahead with its plans to build the RC centre at the void deck anyway, disregarding the residents’ feedback. This was announced on its Facebook page on 7 March 2015 [Link]. As such, MP Nair lost a lot of credibility among these residents at The Peak@Toa Payoh. To make things worse, it is understood that the grassroots leaders in the area are not elected by residents. They are appointed by MP Nair.

Also, some former NTUC Income financial consultants (FCs) who are living in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC are equally unhappy with MP Nair. At the moment, the FCs are suing their former employer for not paying retrenchment benefits when it terminated their status as full-time employee. MP Nair, a Senior Counsel from Drew & Napier LLC, is representing NTUC Income. These FCs are unhappy that their own MP is representing NTUC Income, fighting against them.

Who is Chee Hong Tat?

Mr Chee is currently the Second Permanent Secretary for Trade and Industry. He was appointed to this position less than a year ago on 1 Dec 2014.

Before this, he was the Chief Executive at the Energy Market Authority from 2011 to 2014 and prior to that, he was the Principal Private Secretary to Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew from 2008 to 2011.

He joined the Administrative Service in 1998 as Assistant Director of Human Resource Planning in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He was subsequently posted to the Ministry of Finance from 2000-2003 where he was Head of Regulatory Services and Secretary to the Council on Corporate Disclosure and Governance. From 2003-2005, he was Deputy Director for Sea Transport and Head of Strategic Planning in the Ministry of Transport. He served in the Ministry of Education as Director of Planning from 2006-2008.

Mr Chee studied at the University of California at Berkeley on an Overseas Merit Scholarship, and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science (Highest Honours) in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts (Highest Honours) in Economics.

He obtained a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Adelaide in 2006, and was awarded the Newmont Australia Prize for Most Outstanding MBA Graduate.

Minister Lawrence Wong was also a former civil servant at MTI. And at one time, he was the Principal Private Secretary to PM Lee from 2005 to 2008. In 2008, Mr Wong became the Chief Executive of Energy Market Authority. He left EMA in 2011 to join politics and stood in GE2011. Mr Chee then took over from Mr Wong’s position in EMA in 2011.

In a way, Mr Chee is following the footsteps of Mr Lawrence Wong. Assuming Mr Chee is elected and became a Minister later, it’s not known if he would follow the footsteps of Mr Wong to continue to attack AHPETC.

Wah.....one by one scared liao....
