When in doubt, these places also have these things called 'websites' and 'phone numbers' where you can confirm and call actual employees for accurate answers.

Since I live in the US I have a different perspective of tipping, as it is normal here and the service industry relies on tipping as part of their salary to survive. The staff at Malio dont make much money there, less than 50k/day. So If you can afford to open bottles and fuck girls at Malio, you shouldn't be so stingy to complain about small tips totalling only $10-15. If that small amount of money honestly bothers you, you should go to Classic instead where you won't be harassed.

Generally, I keep track of my main sofa waiters and give each abt 50k at end of night for serving/pouring drinks and prevent boliao gers invade my space looking for LDs (some times more if they are very good). For other random waiters who just do small things, I keep small 10k/20k notes for them if I like them. Doormen, and pushy/greedy waiters who ask for tips for doing nothing I ignore.

As for Asia this tipping habit is brought over by western visitors which is very prevalent in Thailand.
In certain countries like China tipping is not compulsory.

That amount barely covers their boarding, and only makes ends meet if they eat rice and tofu or cheap foods. Of course if they could find a livable wage they would do so.....but these guys dont' have the same opportunities and privileges we do living in 1st world countries; Indonesia still struggles with massive unemployment and lack of education. Taking any job to make something (even though not enough) is better than nothing. This is why you see so many beggars and traffic people on the streets working for mere coins.

I don't want to keep re-iterating this, but if people are truly bothered by lowly 3rd world minimum wage workers trying to earn a small tip for providing good honest services, then they should go somewhere else, or just suck it up and deal with it; be a selfish asshole or be generous, just don't complain about it and deter others who wish to be generous instead of greedy. I think its fine for them to 'expect' a tip given that they understand it should be earned and not just gifted. Monthly salary for low level service jobs in Jakarta should be no more than US$300.
In fact the minimum wage is US$252.
Labour cost even cheaper than Tier 2 cities in China! :D

This explains why accomodation and food/beverage costs in certain parts in Jakarta are much more competitive than Bangkok.

While that is the legal min. wage guidelines for full-time workers, but many employers get away paying even less given the unemployment rate and difficulty finding paid jobs.

I know a girl with a small family restaurant, and she pays a part-time helper only 1jt/month and a full-timer 2Jt/month! I've been told Malio dancers make $15/day + tips/extra services, while waitstaff make about $5/day, which i believe. In any case i think we can all agree they are low wage workers and worthy of some generosity here and there for good services. Respectfully, I think you are misinformed on this matter. Do you know the average wage of these staff is about 1-2 Juta/month? and despite working these jobs they still live in poverty. That amount barely covers their boarding, and only makes ends meet if they eat rice and tofu or cheap foods. Of course if they could find a livable wage they would do so.....but these guys dont' have the same opportunities and privileges we do living in 1st world countries; Indonesia still struggles with massive unemployment and lack of education. Taking any job to make something (even though not enough) is better than nothing. This is why you see so many beggars and traffic people on the streets working for mere coins.

I don't want to keep re-iterating this, but if people are truly bothered by lowly 3rd world minimum wage workers trying to earn a small tip for providing good honest services, then they should go somewhere else, or just suck it up and deal with it; be a selfish asshole or be generous, just don't complain about it and deter others who wish to be generous instead of greedy. I think its fine for them to 'expect' a tip given that they understand it should be earned and not just gifted. Honestly, we are talking at most a few dollars, which is nothing to us, but really helps out the hardworking staff struggling to survive.

Absolutely agree. Being a Foodie depends mostly on your own mentality. You need to be a person that can appreciate eating good street food as much as restaurant fine-dining, as well as learning to enjoy dark meat (and strange cuts) as much as white meat :). Your response should have been: "then extra tips for you, no have" and wait a few min for her to break and give in. You need to act tough and like you don't care, take it or leave it. These masseuse make most of their $ off tips and 99% rather just make 200-300k instead of risk nothing.

But not to beat this issue to death, if you wanna avoid ripoff do your research before you enter to know the proper prices, or even ask the desk staff or attendant (can give small tip) what the normal prices should be. When you walk into these places randomly and knowingly subject yourself to their strongarm tactics with their balls in your hands, you lose the right to complain about it afterwards.

One thing i want to mention at the 1st tier KTV places is the tips. The mommy always suggest 500k+ tips for each girl, but i have given less before, (like 200/300k) dependent on additude and service and fun. However, i usually don't frequent these KTV places because the value isn't there from my perspective. I"m glad you had fun.

I think Korea and Japan will be the next underestimated mongering destinations (due to the rise of popularity of Thailand/PI) as their economies are slowing down and places opening up to foreigners. You will not find places to get girls as cheap as $40/session like in Thai/Viet/PI, but possible to find decent fair skin girls for about ~$100-120/session which is excellent value for 1st world countries. Of course, this will be offset by more expensive food, hotel, and transport costs.

The main problem that will always persist is: 1. Insular culture of some/many places that refuse any foreigners/Gaijins even of Asian descent. 2. Lack of good English spoken, which makes these destinations more difficult to navigate compared to Thailand, Malaysia etc...

Let's face it spending in Korea and Japan is definitely not cheap in first world economies.
However if you're coming from a first world economy country then Korea and Japan is not any more expensive than your hometown.

What I want to highlight is better value.
When I say value it does not mean cheaper source.
Like you said US$100-120/session for a reasonable good quality Korean or Jap is considered good value.
Much better paying US$90/session for an overpriced Thai FL in Bangkok.
The true market price for Thai FL in Bangkok should be in the US$40-50/session region then that's is what I call value.

Also in each country there are bound to have certain districts that are more expensive than the others.
With that you can plan on where you want to spend on accomodation and meals that is suited for your budget.

Best part about first world economies is their well connected and efficient Metro/Subway network.
If I can survive using Jakarta's beat up KRL trains (complimentary track hopping on foot :D) then Korea and Japan is a walk in the park.

I actually like Alexis, but only to visit once in awhile as a treat to look for any special gems if cannot find suitable girl in other local places. I'm a picky bastard these days. If able to consistently find girls i like at Classic, surely would not opt to pay 1.4jt if can find comparable for 350k. I don't see a problem to visit ocasionally as long as you don't overtip the girls (The sheet suggest 200/300/500k tips but you can give cash, or tip less if shit service). The local girls are typically the best looking spa girls in the city, and cheaper than suanas in Macau and China. Japan got soapland serwit for $140 now? that cannot be gaijin prices though... ??

taxi drivers always try to rip off. even grab/uber will always ask pay for parking even if it is free.
usually max is 5k for parking..some places don't have free time once u enter.

gran melia is out of the way, around kuningan area. but its an alternative road up to classic/travel, not via the central macet sudirman/thamrin.
