Two suspects have been arrested for allegedly selling pornographic videos worth millions of rupiah through social media, the Jakarta Police's special crimes unit said on Wednesday (16/03).
The suspects, identified only by their initials F.W. and F.F., were apprehended separately in Depok, West Java, on Jan. 26 and in East Jakarta on March 14.
Investigations later revealed that the two purportedly sold the videos, most of which contain lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender material, since November, and reaped between Rp 10 million and Rp 30 million ($755-$2,260) per month.
The videos were packaged in DVDs, flash disks and external hard disks. They advertised through their Instagram accounts, and transacted with their clients through other means.
"They targeted the broad public. They attracted them through social media, and they distributed the videos through courier services," Adj. Sr. Comr. Agung Marlianto, of the Jakarta Police's special crimes unit, said on Wednesday.
Investigators also seized two cell phones, a laptop computer, a memory card containing 300 pornographic videos, a flash disk (also containing 300 pornographic videos) and three external computer hard disks, among other items, from the suspects.
The two suspects have been charged under the laws on pornography and film, which carry a combined maximum sentence of 18 years in prison and a fine of Rp 18 million.

Now we ain’t sayin’ he a gold digger, but a young man in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province has become the talk of his hometown, and the nation, for marrying a woman more than four decades his senior.
Muhammad Idris, 20, on Wednesday married 65-year-old Inade — whose first husband died in 2015 — and they say it’s love, actually.
“We actually love each other. Maybe we are what’s called soulmates,” Inade told reporters at her wedding, as quoted by Liputan 6.
According to reports, Idris worked as a picker at Inade’s vast clove plantation in South Sulawesi’s Sidrap regency before the two met and fell in love.
Thousands attended their wedding reception, most curious to see the unusual May-December marriage. Among them was the deputy speaker for the South Sulawesi Regional Council (DPRD) Syaharuddin Alrif.
“I was curious so I wanted to see. It so happens the people of this village are close to me. I came straight from [the South Sulawesi capital of] Makassar,” he said.
Although marriages between older men and much younger women are hardly unusual in Indonesia, the opposite is extremely rare. Perhaps the most famous example of such unions was that of then-16-year-old Slamet with 75-year-old Rohaya in South Sumatra last year — by threatening to commit suicide if their families didn’t bless their wedding.
Despite being much younger (technically it’s not even legal for men to get married in Indonesia until they’re 19), Slamet appeared to assume the role of a traditionally misogynistic husband, telling the media he locks up his bride whenever he goes out so “other men won’t bother her”.
Before Slamet and Rohaya, the wedding of a 28-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman also made headlines in Indonesia and around the world.

2 boys in Indonesia told to sleep in graveyard as punishment for dressing up as pocongs to spook people
http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2018/12/12/a1.png
Two boys in Indonesia got a taste of the pocong life (or death, as it were) after their attempt to emulate a ghostly prank they saw on social media went terribly wrong.
According to reports, on Friday night of all nights, the two boys from the city of Depok, West Java, dressed up as pocongs — zombie-like ghosts wrapped up from head to toe with white cloth, as is customary in Islam, with only their faces uncovered — to spook residents of their neighborhood.
But it appears the boys, whose ages were not revealed, did not do enough in the costume or makeup departments to conceal their identities as somebody from their neighborhood immediately noticed who they were and informed others.
“The locals secured them and the boys admitted to have been influenced by what they saw on Instagram. They say they often watched silly videos, so they made themselves up to look like pocongs and appeared on a field,” neighborhood head Arsyad told Tribun yesterday.
Arsyad also said that locals could only think of one fitting punishment for the boys.
“The locals punished them by making them sleep in a graveyard near Gelora field. They were told to sleep there until their parents came to pick them up. They are still little, so we did not do anything else,” he said.
http://polyfedelicio.us/imgs/images/2018/12/12/a2.jpg
In addition to the graveyard punishment, Arsyad said the boys have been scolded by their parents, who have decided to limit their mobile phone use (which is probably a more terrifying punishment for kids these days).

Singapore agency behind online listings of Indonesian domestic helpers gets license suspended
https://img2.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/26957/269570622c1bd81fe30cb268fff2ac2a02161962.jpg
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced yesterday that they’ve suspended the license of SRC Recruitment LLP, the employment agency responsible for putting up Indonesian domestic workers “for sale” on online marketplace Carousell.
MOM had been alerted to the listings on Sept 14, and immediately put an end to the nonsense by telling Carousell to remove the offending posts. A user that went by the handle @maid.recruitment had been putting up profiles of various domestic helpers — complete with their faces exposed — and some of the listings were even indicated as “sold”. It’s demeaning and dehumanizing to the people involved (no matter how willing they are), grotesquely akin to auctioning people off as slaves.
https://img1.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/26957/269570612e912defeb75ba2db5a2726c3d7ac2da.jpg
Investigations revealed that SRC Recruitment LLP was the culprit behind the Carousell listings, and the penalty the employment agency received is that it can no longer find new foreign domestic workers to recruit and emplace.
https://img0.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/26957/26957060aa40f0e2167aeec8dcac44d294655664.jpg
If SRC Recruitment LLP chooses to continue operating without a license, offenders could be fined up to SG$80,000 (IDR870 million) and/or jailed up to two years.
“We strongly condemn the advertising of FDW services in an undignified manner,” said Commissioner for Employment Agencies Kevin Teoh. “Advertising FDWs on an internet platform meant for trading goods is completely inappropriate and unacceptable.”
Last week, the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore has reportedly expressed its concerns about the exploitative practice and have requested a thorough investigation of such cases, the Jakarta Post reported. MOM has assured the Indonesian Embassy that investigations are ongoing.
“The Ministry sternly warns (employment agencies) against similar actions that would denigrate the dignity of FDWs working in Singapore.”
Listing migrant workers like commodities are nothing new in Singapore, where websites such as Netmaid.com.sg and Bestmaid.com.sg exist as “maid search databases”. Netmaid, for one, offers 19,709 domestic worker profiles for interested hirers to peruse through. Just like the Carousell listings, each profile exposes their faces as well as individual characteristics such as their religious background, their age, and their marital status.
“There must be standards and a code of conduct in providing job openings and employment information for migrant domestic workers in accordance with human rights requirements,” said Wahyu Susilo, the executive director of advocacy group Migrant CARE about the Carousell listings.

Indonesian policewoman tricked by convicted murderer to share sexy pics, gets fired after photos go viral
https://mger.co/img/u54Cm.jpg
A policewoman in Indonesia has been dishonorably discharged after her sexy selfies, which were spread by a man she thought was another police officer but turned out to actually be a convicted murderer, were spread on social media.
The woman, a police brigadier identified by her initial D from the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar, was fired from the force after authorities saw the incriminating photos when they went viral online.
“According to our code of ethics, the immoral activity she carried out made her no longer eligible to be a member of the National Police,” Makassar Police Chief Grand Commissioner Wahyu Dwi Ariwibowo said today, as quoted by Detik.
According to reports, D was catfished by a man she met through social media. The man introduced himself to D as a police commissioner stationed in Lampung province. They eventually became more intimate and exchanged phone numbers and later pictures of themselves — including the sexy selfies.
The photos soon went viral after D’s online boyfriend posted them to social media. To add to her devastation, she later found out that the man was not a police commissioner at all, but rather a convicted murderer serving time at a Lampung prison.
While it feels like an injustice for a woman to lose her job for taking private photos and having them spread online without her consent (photos she was tricked into taking, no less), things could have been even worse for D as Indonesia has anti-pornography laws so strict that she could potentially have been in violation of them just for sending the selfies to somebody else in the first place. However, there have been no reports of her being criminally charged as of yet.
Activists have criticized the Indonesian police force for their misogynistic policies in the past, most particularly in regards to their requirement that all female recruits undergo the highly unscientific practice of virginity testing for “moral” reasons (male cadets aren’t required to take the test).

Most Indonesian cities are notoriously unfriendly towards pedestrians, none more so than the capital of Jakarta. Seeing sidewalks overridden with kaki lima (food carts) and motorcycles (either parked or using them as a shortcut) is a common occurrence but that’s on top of basic design flaws like an overall lack of sidewalks and crosswalks.
And on top of the design flaws, there are the design fails like this:
216003
This photo, showing a zebra cross outside of the Tamini Square shopping center in Makasar, East Jakarta, was posted by Koalisi Pejalan Kaki (Pedestrian Coalition), a group that advocates for pedestrian rights in Indonesia.
Their sarcastic caption says, “Pedestrians better train in parkour first before crossing this zebra cross.”
This design fail is clearly more than just an annoyance for pedestrians. Reporting on the viral photo, Kompas interviewed several local residents who noted that the failure to leave an opening in the fence to accommodate the zebra cross made it significantly more dangerous as pedestrians had to enter the street from an area where angkot minibuses are often parked and where it was more difficult to see incoming traffic.
Seeing design flaws that are due to a lack of funds is one thing, but in this case the government actually wasted money on an unnecessary segment of barrier that seems to exist only to make life harder and more dangerous for pedestrians.
This one certainly goes up there in the Indonesian sidewalk hall of shame (alongside those cities that have tactile guiding blocks for the blind that lead them directly into trees or, in case, a canal). With such carelessness on the part of the government, it’s no wonder that Indonesian are among the least active walkers in the world (according to one study).

Indonesia's central bank has made another attempt to curb further sell-off in the rupiah, but analysts said the currency would remain under pressure in the coming months against the backdrop of rising U.S. Treasury yields and an escalation in global trade tensions .
In a widely expected move, Bank Indonesia on Thursday raised its benchmark policy rate by 25 basis points to 5.75 percent. The latest move took the country's total interest rate hikes this year to 1.50 percentage points. The central bank in Southeast Asia's largest economy has been one of the most hawkish in the region.
The rupiah strengthened slightly against the greenback on Friday, with one U.S. dollar buying around 14,890 rupiah compared to 14,912 rupiah the previous day. So far this year, the currency has depreciated by more than 8 percent against the U.S. dollar — one of the worst hit currencies as investors flee emerging markets deemed vulnerable in the current climate.
"Our move, as we conveyed yesterday, basically is to strengthen our external resilience and to strengthen the stability of our economy, especially the rupiah," Perry Warjiyo, governor of Bank Indonesia, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Friday.
Warjiyo added that defending the rupiah is critical to contain the country's current account deficit — a measure of the flow of goods, services and investments in and out of the country. A further weakening in the rupiah makes it more expensive for Indonesia to finance that deficit — a reason widely cited by many investors for taking their money out of the country.
In addition to raising interest rates, Bank Indonesia has been tapping its foreign exchange reserves to buy up the rupiah. Those foreign cash reserves have slipped to $117.9 billion in August, the lowest level since January 2017.
But Warjiyo said the reserves remain "ample" to defend the currency again, if needed.
Some analysts said the downward pressure on the rupiah is not over and the central bank will have to raise interest rates again the coming months.
"We think a combination of rising US Treasury yields and an intensification of the trade war between the US and China will keep the rupiah under pressure. We are expecting two more rate hikes before the end of the year," Gareth Leather, senior Asia economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a Thursday note.
Higher Treasury yields make the U.S. a more attractive investment destination compared to Indonesia, and the Southeast Asian country's exports could be hurt if global trade slows down as a result of tariff tensions between the U.S. and China.

Indonesia’s central bank, one of Asia’s biggest interest-rate hikers last year, is widely expected to leave policy unchanged on Thursday, with analysts paring back calls for further increases in 2019.
All 26 economists surveyed by Bloomberg predict Governor Perry Warjiyo and his board will keep the seven-day reverse repurchase rate at 6 percent for a second month, after hiking six times by a total of 175 basis points since May.
Bank Indonesia is getting a breather from a more cautious U.S. Federal Reserve, the currency’s rebound from a two-decade low, and a slowdown in the global economy. Warjiyo himself signaled policy makers are close to the end of the tightening cycle, telling lawmakers on Wednesday that the benchmark rate had almost reached its peak.
Mohamed Faiz Nagutha, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Singapore, said it “almost certainly” seems as though it’s the end of Indonesia’s tightening cycle. He no longer sees Bank Indonesia hiking rates this year, and said it could start easing in the second half of 2019.
“We are not penciling in rate cuts yet and await further signals from policy makers on the policy objectives going forward,” he said.
After being hit by an emerging-market rout last year, the rupiah has gained about 3 percent against the dollar in the past month, while investors have pumped almost $600 million into government bonds since the start of January.
Here’s what to watch for in the statement:
Rupiah Rebound
The central bank took an aggressive stance last year on rate hikes to help stabilize the rupiah after it dropped almost 6 percent against the dollar to reach its lowest level in 20 years. With the currency on a firmer footing in 2019 -- due in part to the market scaling back bets of Fed tightening and the BI’s proactive stance -- policy makers can afford to ease up on hikes.
Fed Future
Key to the rupiah’s outlook is the Fed. Since taking office in May, Warjiyo has vowed to be pre-emptive on rates as he sought to keep pace with the Fed and counter the emerging-market sell-off. With U.S. central bank officials indicating they’re now less inclined to keep raising rates given mounting global risks, Indonesian policy makers can also take more of a wait-and-see approach.
“Much has changed since December 2018 with markets now thinking the Fed has turned over a new leaf to show that they’ll be more dovish in 2019,” said Nicholas Mapa, an economist at ING Bank NV in Manila.
Domestic Outlook
The inflation outlook remains benign for now: consumer prices rose 3.1 percent in December from a year ago, well within the central bank’s target band of 2.5 to 4.5 percent.
Still, the current account deficit which exacerbated last year’s outflows remains a key concern. While the central bank sees the gap easing to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2019, after probably reaching 3 percent last year, data Tuesday showing Indonesia posted a record trade deficit in 2018 underscores the challenge that’s facing policy makers.
An upcoming presidential election also looms as a complicating factor. President Joko Widodo is keen to spur economic growth and keep a lid on cost-of-living pressures. The economy’s expansion of about 5 percent is still short of the 7 percent target Widodo set when he came to office in 2014.
At its last policy rate meeting in December, Bank Indonesia said the domestic economy was forecast to expand 5 percent to 5.4 percent this year.
WHAT OUR ECONOMISTS SAY...
“The central bank in December appeared more inclined to lean on direct intervention in the currency market to address any seasonal year-end volatility, rather than tighten further. In a Goldilocks scenario where the U.S. and China work out a resolution to their trade war, Bank Indonesia may start to unwind some of its rate hikes before year-end.”
-- Tamara Henderson, Bloomberg Economics

This is basically Indonesia’s real-life answer to Snakes on a Plane, but with a scorpion instead of a seemingly infinite number of snakes and without the over-the-top profanity of Samuel L. Jackson.
A photo showing a large scorpion crawling on an overhead bin on Lion Air flight JT-239 from the Riau capital of Pekanbaru to Jakarta yesterday has gone viral online, raising one important question again and again: How, Lion Air?
The flight departed Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport in Pekanbaru at 5 pm and was scheduled to land in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport at 7 pm. One passenger named Karim Taslin told Detik that the scorpion crawled out onto the overhead bin above his row after the aircraft had already landed and as passengers were collecting their cabin luggage.
“I was sitting in row 19 along with 2 other passengers, an elderly couple. Seeing the scorpion right above us, we got out from out seats and hurried to stay away,” Karim said today, adding that he took photos of the venomous insect.

“I pressed the emergency button, but got no response so I shouted for help,” he said.
Karim said chaos then ensued in the cabin, preventing Lion Air officials from quickly getting to the scorpion. Before they reached row 19, the scorpion had already crawled back into the overhead bin and has not been seen since.
Hopefully someone has managed to capture the elusive arachnid before it terrorizes passengers on the next flights.
We have reached out to Lion Air and will update this story if we get a response.
Curiously, this is not an isolated incident of an animal (besides humans) roaming free on an Indonesian plane. In 2016, passengers aboard a Garuda Indonesia flight from the Papua capital of Jayapura to Jakarta were treated to a slithery shock when they saw what appeared to be a snake crawling around the plane’s cabin. Garuda later said the reptile was captured and it turned out it was actually a lizard that had escaped from a non-regulatory cage that was being transported in the plane’s cargo.
Update: In an official statement today, Lion Air said the insect in the viral photo “resembles a spider”, not a scorpion. They said they had performed pest control on the aircraft a week before the flight but offered no explanation as to how the animal got on board, only that an “intensive investigation” is being carried out.
Furthermore, Lion Air said they haven’t been able to capture the insect, regardless of what it may actually be.

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta inaugurated its first mass rapid transit system on Sunday, a US$1.1 billion project seen as crucial to tackling some of the world’s worst traffic congestion.
President Joko Widodo and other officials joined a ceremony in Jakarta to give a green light for the 16-kilometer (10 miles) line, almost six years after construction began on the Japanese-backed project.
Tens of thousands of excited Jakartans were in attendance and eager to try riding on the subway for the first time, mobbing the president for selfies while music blared and traditional performers danced on a nearby stage.
“Honestly I am so happy,” office worker Mutia Fitrianti told AFP. “Now we don’t have to go abroad just to ride an MRT.”
The train system runs above and below ground and stretches from the central Hotel Indonesia to the southern reaches of the Southeast Asian megalopolis of some 30 million people.
222745
It aims to cut travel times between the two points to just 30 minutes from around two hours, offering some relief to frustrated commuters long used to spending much of their day stuck in traffic.
The new line is set to open to the public on Monday, with tickets free during the first week.
Construction on a second line linking downtown to Jakarta’s northern port is also kicking off Sunday with completion slated for 2024, and more lines are envisioned in the future.
A separate elevated rail network is also being built to link satellite cities with Jakarta, nicknamed the Big Durian after the pungent fruit that bitterly divides fans and its detractors.
The public transit projects are part of a sweeping infrastructure push that Widodo hopes will boost the fortunes of Southeast Asia’s biggest economy — and get him re-elected in national polls next month.
“If we have an integrated transportation system, it will be easier for people to go places and they will leave their cars or motorcycles at home,” Widodo told journalists on Sunday.
Clogged streets
Over the past decade, rising incomes in the country of 260 million have created a ballooning middle class and sent vehicle ownership soaring.
But that’s also brought hazardous air pollution and annual economic losses that run into the billions as cars crawl along the capital’s roadways in the steamy tropical heat — alongside an underused bus system.
Environmentalists hope that the new line will cut traffic-linked carbon emissions by about half.
It could also make a dent in annual economic losses of some 65 trillion Rupiah ($4.6 billion) linked to road congestion, according to government figures.
The multi-billion dollar project is funded through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“We think MRT Jakarta is the project of the century for us,” JICA senior vice president Tanaka Yasushi told reporters.
But transport analysts have cautioned that the new line and cheap prices will not cure the traffic woes of a city infatuated with private vehicles and with few decent sidewalks.
“The MRT won’t immediately ease the traffic because changing the culture and attitudes isn’t easy,” Hendi Bowoputro, a public transit expert at the University of Brawijaya, told AFP before the inauguration.
And the line’s expected 130,000 daily passengers represent only about 10 percent of those who already cram into a decades-old commuter rail network.

JAKARTA - A pair of bare-breasted mermaid statues have been given the family values treatment at an Indonesian amusement park where officials slipped golden tube tops over their chests.
While the nude statues have been on display for years at Jakarta’s Ancol Dreamland, a recent policy aimed at respecting “Eastern values” has seen the mermaids get an official cover-up.
The statues were initially just covered with gold fabric, but they’ve now also been moved to a more secluded area after visitors kept pulling the coverings down, park sources said.
Ancol Dreamland spokeswoman Rika Lestari insisted no outside agitators were behind the cover-up.
“There was no pressure from any group,” she said. “Ancol is trying to become an amusement park and vacation spot for families.”
That didn’t stop the park’s move from being widely mocked.
“Thanks Ancol. Now, no one will commit adultery of the eyes from looking at the mermaids’ breasts,” comedian Soleh Solihun wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, Lestari told the Indonesian newspaper Kompas: “We’re Eastern people, we have Eastern culture, so what was inappropriate we made it more appropriate.
“It’s just a matter of perception, because what we’ve done was the best for us. It’s a good thing, so why not.”
Indonesia is the world’s biggest Muslim majority country and relatively conservative social values are prevalent.

Masseuse gets political with ‘kerokan’, draws Prabowo’s ballot number on unwitting customer’s back
226010
If you’re Indonesian or have been in the country for some time, you’re most likely familiar with kerokan, the traditional Indonesian treatment in which a blunt object (usually a coin or ladle) is scratched repeatedly across one’s back. It is believed by locals to be a cure for masuk angin (a condition that literally translates to “wind entering” but resembles the common cold) but one kerokan practitioner used it to vividly convey his political preferences ahead of the election on April 17 — by using his unwitting customer’s back as a canvas.
Yesterday, a Twitter user named Aida documented her brother’s kerokan session through several Instagram story posts. The male masseuse who performed the kerokan was allegedly a “fanatic supporter” of presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno, who were officially assigned the number 2 position on the ballot in the upcoming election. According to Aida’s posts, the masseuse was such a fanatic that he made sure to leave a conspicuous memento on his client’s back, the result of which have gone viral in photos shared by Aida’s friend.
“My poor brother, he had a cold, was massaged by a masseuse who was a fanatic supporter of one of the [presidential] candidates. During the massage, he kept on campaigning [for Prabowo]. I thought he would stop there, but turns out… “ Aida tweeted, adding that her brother was initially oblivious to the conspicuous kerokan mark.
“[My brother] only realized after the masseuse left. He’s been so pissed. ‘This is a violation of privacy rights and body for the sake of campaigning, without consensus’. I really don’t get people [these days],” Aida continued.
Aida said she “laughed to the point of tearing up” before it hit her that what the masseuse did was super inappropriate. She also reflected that people in general have been “excessive with their obsession” when it comes to the upcoming election.
“There’s a boundary where we should not force other people, even when we think that our choice is good or right. Respecting other people’s privacy is actually respecting our own choices. An obsession is a way for damaged people to damage themselves more,” Aida concluded her statement.
Well, regardless of who Aida’s brother actually supports, at least kerokan marks generally disappear within a few days. So it could’ve been a whole lot worse — imagine if instead of a masseuse it had been a tattooist who drew a huge “1” or “2” on their customer without their knowledge.

Indonesia election: 'Ghosts and vampires' draw voters to ballot box
http://www.denpix.com/images/2019/04/17/hzghost0417a.jpg
JAKARTA - "Ghosts and vampires" greeted voters at a South Jakarta polling station on Wednesday (April 17), as Indonesian election officials pounced on creative ways to draw crowds to the ballot box.
And like any fancy dresser fully committed to playing the part, each of these officials at the Jalan Gunung Balong station had a story on how they "died".
"I got run over by a bus," logistics worker Mohammad Dasir, 42, told The Straits Times as he guided arriving voters shrouded in a kafan, a white sheet typically used to wrap bodies in Muslim burials.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McvR5ua4jR0
His neighbour Andi Alfaqi, 20, claimed he died after someone hit his head with a shovel while he was asleep. He accessorised his vampire outfit with a shovel to back up his story.
The university student was helping voters dip their finger into a semi-permanent ink bottle, a method used in Indonesia to prevent double voting.
Officials at other polling stations also dressed up, lending a festive feel to the election.
In Surabaya, East Java, they wore superhero costumes with Spider-man and Thor putting in an appearance. Meanwhile, cowboy outfits, complete with sheriff badges, and Chinese traditional attire were spotted at polling stations in Cibadak, Bandung.
The horror-themed polling station in Gunung Balong attracted a higher-than-average turnout, say officials.
Head of the Gunung Balong polling station committee Adnan Yasin, 37, told reporters that more residents did show up to vote, compared to the last election in 2014.
"I would say our turnout this time round reached 80 per cent, from around 65 per cent five years ago," he told reporters after polls closed at 1pm.
Mr Adnan, himself dressed as a vampire, said the volunteer officials manning the station spent their own money on their costumes.
Funds for the decorations - including gravestones and a fortune teller booth - came from the tent hire cost allocated by the general election commission (KPU). Instead of hiring a tent, the officials utilised a pavillion at a resident's house, free of charge.
Voters arriving at the polling station had to step between two graves, both etched with a birth date of April 17, 2019, and a death date of April 17, 2024, signifying the five-year term for candidates in today's election.
"We wanted to introduce funny and scary elements to our polling station. This would spark curiosity, and make people come. It worked well," Mr Adnan said.
When asked by The Straits Times how he died, Mr Adnan said: "I was bitten by an older dracula."

Indonesia to evaluate elections as dozens of polling booth attendants, police die from exhaustion
http://www.xpmg.co.uk/images/2019/04/29/1.jpg
JAKARTA (XINHUA) - An evaluation would be conducted on Indonesia's election process, following the deaths of dozens of police officers and attendants who had served in several polling booths in the country, head of Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) Arief Budiman said last Saturday (April 20).
The victims were said to have died due to extreme exhaustion after the vote counting process.
KPU commissioner Viryan Aziz said 54 members of polling station working committees died during and after the 2019 General Elections on April 17.
“Fifty-four people passed away and another 32 have fallen ill,” he said, as reported by Tempo online news on Monday (April 22).
KPU head Mr Arief said: "Yes, we will evaluate it. Their jobs were really hard, have many responsibilities in their tasks. Exhaustion most likely happened to them while they carried out their duties."
Adding to the number of deaths of those handling the elections, Indonesia Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said last Friday that 10 police officers have died from sickness, exhaustion and mishaps related to their tasks of guarding the polling booths or delivering the elections necessities to remote areas.
West Java Provincial KPU chairman Rifqi Almubarok said counting the votes and filling the official documents in the polling booths took too much time.
Polling booth attendants were obliged to finish vote counting on both the presidential and legislative elections later in the night after the ballot casting last Wednesday morning.
http://www.xpmg.co.uk/images/2019/04/29/2.jpg
"Based on our monitoring, all of those duties were averagely settled at 5am the next day. In some cases, it was even finished at 12pm the next day. There were no pauses in all of those jobs. Exhaustion was inevitable," Mr Rifqi said last Saturday.
Indonesia saw an unprecedented election this year, as voters were obliged to directly vote for president and vice-president pairings as well as members of central and regional parliaments at the same time.
The 2019 election in Indonesia was unique, as it was conducted within eight hours nationwide, with over 192 million listed eligible voters. Two million of them voted in 130 cities overseas earlier, before the nationwide schedule.
The KPU provided more than 809,500 polling booths in 524 cities and regencies for the voters to cast their votes. Some 24.8 trillion rupiah (S$2.39 billion) was allocated to finance the political event.
The 2019 elections registered a participation rate of around 82 per cent, the highest level in the nation's history.
According to quick counts - unofficial results organised by polling agencies - President Joko Widodo won 54.5 per cent of votes while his rival Prabowo Subianto earned 45.5 per cent of votes.
The KPU is scheduled to officially announce winner of the election after it settles the manual vote counting on May 22.

The government may have warned hardline groups against conducting raids against restaurants and other businesses they think are disrespecting Muslims during Ramadan, but, as has been the case in recent years, law enforcers themselves may also be considered guilty of acting overzealously during the holy fasting month.
Yesterday, the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) in the West Sumatra capital of Padang went around the city to look for restaurants that remained open during the day while Muslims were fasting.
As reported in a press release from the agency, which was shared on Facebook by the city administration’s Public Relations Department, the Satpol PP officers found 10 restaurants that remained open yesterday. When asked by the officers, the owners of the restaurants said they only served their food to non-Muslims.
That explanation proved to be acceptable for the restaurants to remain open, under the condition that the Satpol PP officers were allowed to put up a banner saying, “Only for non-Muslims” at the front of each restaurant.
“I hope that the restaurant owners do not take down the banners we put up. If the banners are gone from the restaurant then we will take stern action against them,” Satpol PP Padang Chief Al Amin said in the release.
As it turns out, Padang’s Satpol PP actually had legal jurisdiction to put up the discriminatory banners. Last week, West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno said, just like “every year”, the province would enforce a regional bylaw requiring all restaurants and eateries to stay shut during the day during Ramadan. Restaurants serving non-Muslims are the only exemption from that rule, although regulations require they put up a sign clearly stating that.
The long-existing by law does not seem to accommodate Muslims who are not required to fast during Ramadan, such as pregnant/breastfeeding women, small children and those who are ill, as the regulations essentially prevent restaurant owners from serving them during the day.
Another problem with the regulation, as some have alluded to in the Facebook post’s comments section, is is that it would be difficult for Satpol PP to determine whether the patrons of a restaurants are Muslim or not, save for infringing on their privacy by checking the religion column on their KTP (ID cards).
The presence of these Ramadan by laws in numerous regions in Indonesia has led to a number of controversial incidents in which authorities themselves have been accused of being inhumane in their enforcement. One notable incident from 2016 involved an elderly woman’s warung in Serang, Banten, which was raided by the city’s Satpol PP for serving food during the day. The officers threw out her food, despite her desperate pleas that they were destroying her livelihood.
After video of the incident went viral, her story ended up having a happy ending when hundreds of Indonesian netizens, including President Joko Widodo himself, donated hundreds of millions of rupiah to help her recover.

Singaporean couple allegedly robbed, injured and harassed in Bali, police investigation underway

The police are investigating the alleged robbery and harassment of a Singaporean couple during their four-day vacation to Bali.
Police commissioner Wayan Arta Ariawan of the Denpasar Police confirmed that an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
“We are conducting an investigation,” Wayan said, as quoted by Bali Post.
Eugene Aathar and Dolly Ho detailed their horrifying experience in a Straits Times article and their story picked up by several Indonesian media outlets as well. The Singaporean couple has already returned to their home country, which they attributed to having bought travel insurance before their trip.
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, as Eugene Aathar and Dolly Ho were making their way back to their villa on a scooter. According to their account of events, Ho was navigating with her phone when two men on a motorcycle rode up to their side, snatched her phone away and then kicked the couple off their scooter.
They said a local man soon approached them, seemingly with the intention of helping, but instead stole their scooter, which they had rented from the place they were staying at. To make matters worse, Aathar said they had cash amounting to around IDR 12 million on the scooter.
The two managed to get a ride to a local hospital, Aathar reportedly sustained minor injuries from falling off the bike, while Ho fractured her shoulder and suffered a minor concussion.
When they returned to the villa, Aathar claimed that the staff harassed them and demanded IDR 250 million (USD 17,296) for the lost scooter and only stopped after they were paid IDR 12 million (USD 830).
However, according to a report by Tribun-Bali, a representative from the villa claimed they had not asked the Singaporean couple to pay IDR 250 million.
“Before they rented (the motorbike), they’d signed an agreement that detailed their responsibilities if there was damage or loss and stated that the renter agreed to provide compensation, whether to fix whatever’s damaged or to pay the amount of the bike if it was lost,” the representative was quoted as saying.
“We did not ask for IDR 250 million. I checked at the time that the price of a new scooter (of that type) ranged between IDR 21 million (USD 1,452) and IDR 25 million (USD 1,729),” the unnamed rep added, explaining that the amount they’d demanded was to guarantee that the guests would be responsible in taking care of the matter.
While the stolen scooter has yet to be located, the representative said that if it was found they would return the money that was paid to them by Aathar and Ho.

Motorcycle taxi drivers call off strike after Go-Jek raises tariff to comply with new gov’t pricing regulation
http://www.denpix.com/images/2019/05/19/go-jek.jpg
Indonesians in major cities are being spared a massive strike from app-based motorcycle taxi drivers (locally known as ojek online or ojol for short), which was initially planned for tomorrow, after ride-sharing unicorn Go-Jek agreed to raise ride tariffs as required by the government in a new regulation.
The Transportation Ministry set new price regulations for ojol rides in late March, which came into effect on May 1. However, while the other major ride-sharing player in Indonesia, Singapore-based Grab, reportedly adjusted their tariffs to comply with the new regulation, Indonesia’s own Go-Jek had not. This led to calls for a strike by major ojol organizations tomorrow, which would have involved drivers simply shutting off their apps for the day.
However, Go-Jek announced this morning that they will comply with the new regulation, leading to ojol drivers calling off the planned strike.
“[The strike was] canceled because the app (Go-Jek) has released an official statement that they will adjust their fare according to the Transportation Ministry’s order,” head of the Association for Two-Wheel Action (Garda) Igun Wicaksono said in a video statement today, as picked up by CNN Indonesia.
In a written statement, Go-Jek Chief Corporate Affairs Nila Marita said the company held a three-day trial of raising ride tariffs and found a significant reduction in ride orders, therefore affecting drivers’ incomes as a whole.
“Even so, with our commitment to support the Transportation Ministry’s regulation, Go-Jek will commence its application of the trial tariff,” she said, as picked up by Viva.
The Transportation Ministry previously announced that the new tariffs, which came into effect on May 1, are divided into three zones, namely Zone I (Sumatra, Bali, and Java excluding Jabodetabek), Zone II (Jabodetabek) and Zone III (Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua). The new tariff floors and ceilings per kilometer for each zone are as follows:
Zone I: IDR1,850-2,300
Zone II: IDR2,000-2,500
Zone III: IDR2,100-2,600
The ministry is also imposing a minimum fare of IDR8,000-10,000 for the first 4 km traveled, while adjusted fares from promos or surge pricing must still fall within the new tariffs.

Dashcam catches robbers attempting to pull key from moving motorcycle on S. Jakarta road
http://s34.z2x5c8.com/2019/05/30/a49b8263ba5cf99ec75b315b612170d3.gif
A video purporting to show a pair of thieves attempting to steal the keys out of a moving motorcycle in South Jakarta has raised concerns about what may be a brazen new method of robbery, but authorities say they are still investigating the clip’s authenticity.
In the video, taken on Wednesday, a motorcyclist named Reza Akum was driving in front of Gandaria City mall with a dashcam camera pointed at him when two motorcycle robbers (commonly referred to as begal in Indonesia) drove up on his right and one of them attempted to grab Reza’s motorcycle key and pull it from the ignition.
“Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Please be careful when you’re riding late at night, because I just experienced a robbery at 1am today near Gandaria City. Alhamdulillah (praise God) I could get away. There were five suspects with two motorcycles, as seen clearly in the camera [sic],” Reza wrote in the post’s caption.
Reza’s video has been viewed almost 1.5 million times as of this afternoon, with many netizens using the video to caution others when driving, particularly late at night.
The Jakarta Metro Police are currently investigating the video, and says they’re open to any and all possibilities related to the incident, including the chance that it could have been staged to make the viral video.
“We have contacted the [owner of the Instagram] account but there are no answers yet,” Jakarta Metro Police Spokesperson Argo Yuwono told reporters yesterday, as quoted by Detik.
Argo also urged Jakartans not to be concerned over viral content about street crime in the capital, saying that police routinely patrol Jakarta and surrounding areas, including late at night. He added that much of the information that gets circulated online — not necessarily Reza’s video — is old recycled content used to spread fear among the public.
“Jakarta’s safety is under control, and the public should not worry about going about their activities. No scary incidents. We are ready to keep the city safe,” Argo said, as quoted by Kompas.
While the police may be playing down of the incident, it’s never a bad idea to be cautious of crime when on Jakarta’s roads, where robberies do happen regularly (if rarely violently). At any rate, Reza may get the chance to prove he wasn’t lying as his latest post on Instagram today suggests he’s reporting the attempted robbery to the South Jakarta Police.

Go-Jek driver has motorcycle stolen while ordering food in Jakarta, still makes delivery
http://s38.z2x5c8.com/2019/05/30/30a57f33b3802ae68053e03318409602.jpg
The story of Anton Budi, a Go-Jek driver so dedicated to his work that he finished a food delivery even after his motorcycle was stolen, has captured the admiration and sympathy of Indonesian netizens who have rewarded Budi’s dedication to duty by giving him enough money to buy several new bikes.
Last Wednesday, Anton received a food delivery order in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. When he left his bike to pick up his order, his parked motorcycle was stolen.
“I panicked, I was dumbfounded and kept thinking what if my customer has to wait. That’s all I could think about,” Anton told Kompas in a story published today.
Determined, Anton contacted a fellow driver friend so that he could deliver the food to his customer Fitro in Sunter, North Jakarta.
“I was relieved when I arrived at my customer’s house. I immediately apologized to him because it took me a long time to deliver his order. I didn’t know I was going to go viral,” Anton said.
Anton later reported his stolen motorcycle to the police, but it has not yet been found.
Fitro, who sympathized with Anton, wrote an open letter addressed to Go-Jek on his Facebook account asking them to reward Anton for his sacrifice.
Fitro wrote that Go-Jek might not be able to help Anton buy a replacement motorcycle, so he started a donation page on the crowdfunding platform Kitabisa instead.
The fundraiser began on May 23 and closed after exceeding 503% of its original IDR19 million (USD1,321) target, with netizens raising over IDR90,6 million (USD 6,300) for Anton.
Anton said he didn’t expect to get help from Fitro and netizens, because he was just doing his job sincerely and to the best of his ability. But he said the generosity of netizens was just the blessing he needed to continue providing for his family.
“In my mind, for now, I just want to provide for my family and give my children the highest level of education,” Anton said.

If you’ve spent much time driving around Greater Jakarta, you’ve no doubt not only gotten stuck in terrible traffic, you’ve probably also found yourself stuck at an intersection where the red light lasts for what feels like an eternity. But unless you had the misfortune to drive through this intersection in Jakarta’s satellite city of Tangerang, you have no idea just how long a red light can truly last.
https://iili.io/jWqe2.jpg
The caption on the photo says “The red light is too long at 700 seconds, residents are frustrated they cannot pass.”
The photo was originally posted 5 days ago by Tangerang news account @abouttng and then reposted by the hugely popular @dramaojol.id drama account 3 days ago, where it went viral and has received over 32,000 likes so far.
The comments on the photo are filled with netizens joking about some of the things they could accomplish during the interminable red light, such as go on the Umrah pilgrimage, record an album or find all seven of the Dragonballs.
According to the head of Tangerang City’s Transportation Agency, Wahyudi Iskandar, the problem was caused by a technical problem that has already been handled.
“Thank God, it was fixed since yesterday,” Wahyudi said today as quoted by Kompas.
Wahyudi said the problem was fixed immediately after his agency received reports about it and apologized for the inconvenience it caused.
Before it was fixed, could it be that this was the longest running red light in the world? The only thing we could find online were stories about a stoplight in America that lasted as long as 5 minutes and 33 second, which Tangerang’s terrifying red light easily beat, but we also found a story about a traffic light in Germany that stayed red for 28 years (though we’re pretty sure nobody actually waited at that light for quite that long).

Man in Aceh goes off on convenience store employees after only receiving IDR1,000 donation
239426
He’s not exactly a beggar, but this man in Aceh is certainly a chooser, and an extremely ungrateful one at that.
On Saturday, a video was shared on social media showing a man in a white thobe going off on employees at an Indomaret convenience store outlet in North Aceh after he only received IDR1,000 (US$0.07) from them for an unspecified donation.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y1t8Z_7gI4
“This is harassment. You’re only looking for profit here. This store is owned by a Chinese, is it not? It’s better that you don’t donate if you only donate IDR1,000. Look at the fish seller at the market, [he gave us] IDR100,000!” the man screamed at the two Indomaret employees standing behind the counter.
The man and his friend, who tossed a few soda bottles on the floor (as seen in other versions of the video), kept screaming at the store employees while repeatedly saying they had been “harassed” by receiving the small donation. A couple of bystanders can be seen calming them down while others filmed the incident.
It didn’t take long for the police to get involved after the video went wildly viral. On Sunday, the North Aceh Police posted two videos on their Instagram page showing that they held a mediation session between the man, who was identified as Jafar Quba, the leader of a youth community at a local mosque, and representatives from Indomaret.
https://iili.io/jWnz7.jpg
In the videos, Jafar, still wearing a white thobe and the same Palestinian flag scarf, read out a written apology saying he was sorry if the viral video “may have disturbed the public” before shaking hands with an Indomaret rep. In the post’s caption, the police wrote that the matter was resolved in a “kekeluargaan” manner, which roughly translates to “between family members” — an Indonesian euphemism for amicably coming to an agreement not to press charges for a crime.
The police did not specify what charitable cause Jafar and his friend were collecting for. That said, some would argue that the way they were going around and collecting money from businesses and street sellers very closely resemble the behavior of preman (thugs) collecting protection money, which is a very common practice in Indonesia.

Teachers ‘play gamelan’ on confiscated cell phones, hammering them in front of shocked students
242077
Like educators around the world, school officials in Indonesia struggle to prevent students from being distracted by their cell phones. Recently, an Indonesian school went viral for hammering into students the importance of not violating the rules about mobile phone use in both a figurative and smashingly literal sense.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ87ZzUAaxQ
Video of the incident, which went viral over the weekend, shows two teachers standing over a table covered in dozens of cell phones, with a crowd of students watching with concern from a distance. The cries of the crowd go up when the first teacher starts hammering away at the phones, and rise higher when the second teacher attacks the mobile devices with such vigor some fall from the table.
It turns out the video was shot at the ‘Wali Songo’ Ngabar Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) in Ponorogo, East Java. A statement explaining the video was posted to the school’s social media account.
“The cell phones that were seen in the video were confiscated items that are prohibited, brought by students who tried to secretly bring cell phones into the dorms in violation of the rules, which can cause a disruption in the educational processes at the pesantren,” reads part of the statement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzUBq1FzhyE
The statement goes on to say that the hammering of the mobile phones was in accordance with the school’s rules and regulations and was intended to create a deterrent effect. It also mentioned that the viral video had not been made or sanctioned by the school.
We’re pretty sure the school also didn’t authorize this amusing gamelan “remix” of the video, putting the sounds of the traditional percussive instrument atop the sound of the hammering of cell phones. But it’s pretty perfect nonetheless.

Little boy, afraid of getting circumcised, stays up on roof for three hours before being talked down
247551
Most Indonesian boys, especially Muslims, get circumcised around the age of five. Many remember the procedure with a certain fondness since circumcisions are traditionally treated as a rite of passage into manhood that is rewarded with parties and presents. But there’s no doubt that the idea of having someone take a knife to your most sensitive region is a terrifying thought for most boys (and men) so we completely understand what was going through this kid’s mind.
The above photo was shared on Facebook by Anik Sutari, a doctor living in the city of Serang in Banten, along with the story of how the little boy ended up sitting on a roof and how he eventually got down.
Dr. Anik starts the caption off by writing: “Throughout my professional history, out of the 20 years I have been doing circumcisions and the thousands of children I have circumcised, this is the first time I’ve seen a child flee to the top of the roof.”
The doctor says everybody tried to talk the boy down, but nobody dared to come up to the roof out of fear the child might run away and endanger his safety. After two hours of waiting there were still no signs that the child wanted to go down, but suddenly his parents thought to call the boy’s teacher.
Soon after, Dr. Anik wrote, the boy’s teacher arrived on the scene and, with a little persuasion, was finally able to talk to boy down.
“And even more miraculous …… the child walked alone to the place where the circumcision was going to take place and positioned himself for the procedure, without being led or forced by anyone …”
The doctor said the boy didn’t struggle, cry or complain of pain at all during the circumcision.
Dr. Anik then muses that the actual circumcision only took 10 minutes, but she had to wait three hours to perform it. But she ends by saying that three hours is not a long time compared to the valuable lesson she got from a great person, the boy’s teacher (unfortunately, the doctor doesn’t describe what exactly the teacher said to the boy, but it must’ve been one hell of a speech).
The circumcision story has gone viral since Dr. Anik posted it on Monday, amassing over 2,000 likes and over 900 shares.

A tourist family caught with stolen goods from Hotel in Bali
Indian family steals accessories from Bali hotel, caught by staff. Viral video shocks Internet
An Indian family was caught stealing accessories from a hotel in Bali. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
A rather "embarrassing" video of a group of Indian tourists "stealing accessories" from a hotel in Indonesia's Bali has gone viral on social media. In the 2.20 minute clip, a man, who appears to be from the Bali hotel, is seen scanning the baggage of an Indian family while they were on their way out of the resort.
At first, members of the Indian family are seen arguing with the hotel staff. But that didn't stop the man from opening every suitcase and taking out things that were stolen from their room - such as towels, electronics, decorative pieces and other stuff. "We are really very sorry. This is a family tour. We will pay you. Please let us go because we have to catch our flight," one of the women is seen telling the man.
Other security officials are also seen frisking their baggage in the video. "I will pay," one of the family members exclaimed but the man from the hotel refused to take money: "I know you have a lot of money but this is no respect."
The video has been posted online by a user called Hemanth, who said in the caption, "Such an embarrassment for India. Each of us carrying an Indian Passport must remember that we are ambassadors of the nation and behave accordingly. India must start cancelling passports of people who erode our credibility."

Jakarta sanitation workers find ‘thousands’ of used condoms clogging up drains around Mega Kuningan
https://www2.imgtrue.com/2019/08/07/condoms-3112007_1280570a38d873900c54.jpg
So, flushing used condoms down the toilet is apparently a big problem in Jakarta. Sanitation workers in the capital found thousands of the prophylactic rubbers — along with other kinds of unsanitary sanitary products — clogging up drains in one busy Jakarta business district.
City-owned sewerage company PD Pal Jaya today said that they found thousands of used condoms during a recent clean up of drains around Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta.
“There was so much trash, including the condoms,” PD Pal Jaya First Director Subekti told Viva.
Other types of waste that cleaners found were used sanitary pads, plastic bottles, as well as discarded underwear.
Subekti then pretty much said what we’re all thinking.
“It’s probably because there are many hotels in the area,” he speculated.
Subekti said that, since the clean up process of the area began on July 2, sanitation workers have in total collected 10 sacks weighing around 10 kilograms each containing the aforementioned waste.
He urged residents and guests at hotels in Mega Kuningan not to flush anything down the toilet that could clog up drains. And, in case you weren’t aware, even excessive amounts of toilet paper can clog pipes, let alone condoms and underwear.
Also, those sanitation workers deserve a raise.

Video of Czech couple ‘dishonoring’ holy temple in Bali sparks outrage among Indonesian netizens
https://www2.imgtrue.com/2019/08/17/shrhsh-770x4110ed5e3420d8fa25e.jpg
A video showing a couple from the Czech Republic washing the woman’s private parts with holy water from a Balinese Hindu temple in Ubud went viral over the weekend, sparking outrage among many Indonesians and furthering the conversation on issues with tourism in Bali.
The video, which was first uploaded as a story to the Instagram account of the woman, Sabina Dolezalova, has since been captured and shared widely by others. The video also shows her boyfriend, Zdenek Slouka, splashing water from a pelinggih (shrine) on Dolezalova’s butt.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlkFLTn5W6o
Unsurprisingly, the video elicited a lot of negative reactions from Indonesians, including Balinese designer Niluh Djelantik, who highlighted the importance of tourists understanding and respecting Balinese culture.
“Bali will drown if we can’t protect ourselves and be selective with the types of tourists that visit the island,” Niluh said in an Instagram post.
The couple uploaded an apology video not long after receiving a torrent of criticisms online in which they expressed their regret and admitted their lack of knowledge about the temple and its holy status.
https://youtu.be/5ZiGOCgeM00
“We are so sorry about the video from yesterday, we dishonored the holy temple and holy water in Ubud, and we didn’t know it,” Slouka said in the video.
According to a statement issued by the Gianyar Police, Slouka and Dolezalova held a meeting with officials from Padangtegal village (where the temple is located) on Sunday. The meeting produced a joint statement from the couple and officials in which they declared that the matter was taken care of.
In a message exchange with Niluh (which the designer shared on her account), the couple again apologized and claimed that it was hard for them to recognize which places are holy because they are atheists.
However, the apology was seen as inadequate by many Indonesians, many of whom commented on how their apologies appeared insincere and blasted the couple for using their atheism as an excuse.
“Atheist does not mean you can disrespect others’ beliefs. And Bali is known as Pulau Dewata [Island of the Gods], so Bali is holy. “Not knowing” is not a valid excuse to disrespect a religion. This is frustrating,” Instagram user @_cunique commented.
Another comment came from Jerinx, the drummer of Bali’s famed punk rock band Superman Is Dead who has become well known as an activist in his own right. Jerinx took to social media to argue that similar incidents involving foreign tourists happen far too often on the island.
“How convenient, a mere apology on Instagram and everything’s fixed. See what happens if we do something similar in their country, the result will be different. Bali has been disrespected too often by tourists,” Jerinx tweeted.
In April of last year, for example, a Spanish vlogger went viral after a video of him climbing up a Balinese temple sparked outrage among Balinese netizens. It was followed by an apology video as well, in which “Bernat” claimed that he didn’t realize he was not allowed to climb up on the temple.
According to Hening Widyastuti, a psychologist from Universitas Sebelas Maret in Solo, Central Java, Bali is often on the receiving end of such disrespectful behavior because “we are too soft.”
“It’s clear that we are too soft … Cultures and traditions in Bali clash with many policies on tourism, especially when it’s related to financial stuff,” Hening told Kompas.com yesterday.
Hening added that many tourists act disrespectfully during their visits because they are spoiled by many services and facilities, which leads to more disrespectful behavior.

Jakarta man arrested for killing wife and burning house with their child inside, police suspect he was angry after wife refused sex
https://www3.imgtrue.com/2019/08/21/fire-orange-emergency-burning1b74ca965cb4fad4.jpg
Police in Jakarta have arrested a man accused of murdering his wife and setting his own house on fire, which has left his five-year-old child, who he left inside during the blaze, severely injured.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as Jumharyono, came home to his house in Kramat Jati subdistrict in East Jakarta at 1am today. The police say they have reason to believe that he then committed his crimes after his wife refused to have sex with him.
“Looking at this man, it’s like he has a hypersexuality disorder. Maybe at the time there was refusal [by his wife to have sex],” Kramat Jati Police Chief Nurdin A Rahman told Detik today.
“At the time [of his arrest], the suspect was butt naked, whereas his wife still had her nightgown on. There’s reason to believe that the wife didn’t want to [have sex], and that’s why he hit her in the face with a rock and stabbed her.”
The police say that after Jumharyono killed his wife, he set fire to their bed in order burn their house down and to get rid of her body. But the fire, which spread to other rooms in the house, did not touch the wife’s dead body. Instead, Jumharyono’s small child, who was asleep at the time, suffered severe burn wounds.
“[The child] suffered burn wounds to 80% of his body. His face and his back are all burned,” Nurdin said.
Neighbors saved the child from the fire and apprehended Jumharyono before turning him in to the police. The suspect is still being interrogated by police today and no specific charges against him have yet been announced.
Over the past few weeks, there have been several highly disturbing cases of domestic violence in Indonesia, all of which were arguably instigated by the belief that a husband should have ownership over his wife’s body. In early July, a Jakarta man slit his wife’s throat, in front of their young child, because she refused to have sex with him. A week later, a woman attacked her husband with an ax because he kept forcing her to have sex with him.
Women’s rights activists have been pushing the government to pass the Elimination of Sexual Violence Bill, which would enforce harsher punishments for perpetrators of gender-based violence and provides greater protections for victims of crimes such as marital rape. However, conservative activists and politicians have fought to block the bill by framing it as being permissive towards sex outside of marriage and supporting LGBT rights.

Man lodges police report after buying fake $10,000 note from online seller; 2 suspects arrested
254128
SINGAPORE - A man reported the sale of counterfeit notes to the police on Tuesday (Aug 20), after he discovered a $10,000 Orchid Series note he purchased online was fake.
Officers from the Commercial Affairs Department arrested two suspects, aged 34 and 55, believed to be the sellers of the note, on Thursday.
Police believe the 34-year-old suspect purchased the counterfeit $10,000 Orchid Series note from an unknown seller in Batam, Indonesia, in August.
He and the 55-year-old suspect are believed to have sold the note online to the buyer for a sum of $11,500.
Police seized the note, as well as two T-shirts, a receipt, three mobile phones and a total of $1,200 as case exhibits.
Those convicted of using counterfeit currency notes as genuine notes may be jailed up to 20 years and fined.
The police reminded the public to remain vigilant and examine all $10,000 Orchid Series notes carefully as they are not commonly available and in circulation.
Readers can refer to the Monetary Authority of Singapore's website for descriptions and images of the Orchid Series notes.
The police reminded the public to report any counterfeit currency, note the description and features of the person presenting the note, and to limit the handling of the counterfeit currency in possession.

The first Indonesian convict to be sentenced to chemical castration says he is refusing the punishment amid doubts that the authorities actually have the means to carry it out.
Allowed out of his isolated cell for an authorized interview with the media yesterday, convicted child molester Muh Aris bin Syukur said he would actually prefer capital punishment over chemical castration for his crimes.
“If they inject me, I will refuse. Because the effect lasts a lifetime. That’s what my friends tell me,” the East Java native said, as quoted by Sindonews, adding that he will refuse to sign a release for the punishment.
“I choose the death penalty instead of [chemical castration]. Or life imprisonment is fine as well. If I can ask for it, then 20 years [is preferable].”
Chemical castration, or the use of hormonal drugs to lower sex offenders’ sex drives, as a punishment, is already utilized in a number of countries based on the idea being that it should reduce the risk of recidivism. But studies have shown that the punishment is only effective in controlling the sexual urges of some sex offenders and less so in others.
As for Aris’ concern about chemical castration’s possible permanent effects, studies have shown that the effects are generally reversible once treatment is discontinued.
Aris was found guilty of raping nine girls from 2015-2018 in Mojokerto. He was arrested in October 2018 after he was caught on a CCTV camera molesting his latest victim.
While prosecutors did not demand chemical castration in their indictment of Aris in court, the Mojokerto District Court nonetheless handed down the punishment on top of his 12-year prison sentence. The ruling was upheld by the city’s High Court.
Aris is the first and so far only convicted child molester in Indonesia to be given the chemical castration sentence in court. However, given that the punishment has no precedent in Indonesia, the Mojokerto Prosecutors Office say they have no means yet to chemically castrate Aris so no date for the execution of the sentence has yet been announced.
The Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), which rejected the government’s request that they be the “executors” of the punishment, reiterated their stance in Aris’ case by refusing to chemically castrate the convicted rapist.
Chemical castration as a punishment was ratified into law in Indonesia after the shockingly brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl in Bengkulu in 2016. Activists say that the threat of severe punishment has not been as successful a deterrent as the government hoped, as sexual assault against children continue to be a serious problem in Indonesia.

Indonesia's Habibie, president during transition to democracy, dies
257266
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie, who came to power during the country's turbulent transition to democracy after former strongman leader Suharto stepped down in 1998, has died, his son said on Wednesday.
Habibie, 83, had been suffering heart failure, Tariq Kemal Habibie told Metro TV.
An engineer by training, Habibie succeeded Suharto as Indonesia's third president only months after becoming his deputy, just as the country sank into a spasms of rioting and economic upheaval.
He held power for 17 months until the late Abdurrahman Wahid became president and his tenure was marked by his agreeing to a referendum for the people of former Portuguese colony East Timor.
Indonesian troops invaded in December 1975 and the following year annexed East Timor as its 27th province.
But Habibie abruptly changed longheld policy in January 1999 and said East Timor could have independence if it rejected autonomy within Indonesia. The East Timorese later voted for independence, unleashing a wave of violence.
Habibie was also known for his quest to turn Indonesia into a technological powerhouse, including trying to develop a national aircraft industry.
President Joko Widodo, speaking at the hospital where Habibie was being treated, described Habibie as a "world class scientist and the father of technology in Indonesia".

Indonesian student brings weapon to school demanding confiscated phone back
257433
Many kids are practically inseparable from their phones these days, but one junior high school student from Gunungkidul in Central Java took that attachment to an extreme new level.
According to the police, the student, who goes to a public junior high school in Ngawen sub-district, was caught playing with his phone during religious studies class. His teacher confiscated the phone because the school has a strict no-phone policy.
The next day, the student went to school but skipped his first few classes. He then went home early and came back, having changed out of his school uniform, while carrying a sharp weapon.
In a video that has gone viral, the student can be seen slowly and ominously walking towards the school with a sickle in hand. One teacher then grabs his phone and slides it across the floor to the student, keeping his distance as the student walks away.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4fwSs0P9Lc
Local police were soon alerted to the incident and tried to mediate the student and the school.
“It can be said that it was brief anger. He’s a teenager so his emotions are still unstable, especially now that he’s only living with his siblings as his parents are out of town,” Ngawen Police Chief Kasiwon said, as quoted by Detik.
No criminal charges were made in this case and the school has decided to put the student through special counseling instead of expelling him.
Unfortunately, student-on-teacher violence is quite common in Indonesia. For example, in 2018, an art teacher in Madura, East Java, died after being hit by one of his students. The past few years have also seen stories other stories about students beating teachers and even attacking them with weapons. Furthermore, there’s at least one incident of a student murdering a teacher over bad grades.
Conversely, teacher-on-student violence is also quite prevalent in Indonesia. One of the most viral cases took place in April of last year, when a teacher in Purwokerto, Central Java, became a criminal suspect for child abuse after a video of him slapping one of his students hard went viral.

Bandung, not Jakarta, is Indonesia’s most traffic congested city according to new study
https://extraimage.com/images/2019/10/07/a1.png
Bandung was once seen as the ideal weekend getaway destination for Jakartans wanting to escape the capital’s maddening macet, but a new study showed that the West Java city has become even more congested than Jakarta.
In late September, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) published a study called the 2019 Update of the Asian Development Outlook, which focuses on matters related to growth in 278 Asian cities. Among the yardsticks for urban growth is traffic congestion, and the study goes about measuring congestion in Asia’s large cities (those with a population of at least 5 million) by determining the time needed to travel during peak hours compared to non-peak hours.
The result may come as a surprise to us in Indonesia, as Bandung came 14th on the list with a congestion value nearing 1.2, meaning that its citizens spend close to 20% more time on the road during peak hours than off-peak hours. Jakarta came 17th in the list, while Surabaya was the only other Indonesian city at 20th.
https://extraimage.com/images/2019/10/07/a2.png
Rendiana Awangga, a member of the Bandung City Council, blamed the city administration for Bandung being named the most congested Indonesian city in the study.
“First and foremost, there is a lack of acceptable public transportation that could encourage the public to ditch their private vehicles,” Rendiana told Detik today.
“The city administration must revitalize public transportation in Bandung. Plans for a light rail transit system, cable cars and more bus routes must be accelerated.”
Of course, different studies use different methodologies to determine traffic congestion and, more often than not, it’s Jakarta that gets the unenviable title of the most congested city in Indonesia. For example, a study in 2017 ranked Jakarta’s traffic as the 12th worst in the world, far higher than any other Indonesian city.

Indonesian lawmaker says foreigners ‘need not worry’ about RKUHP article on extramarital sex
http://imgurl.me/images/2019/10/15/bike-2058001_1280-960x5407e896294a22913cf.jpg
A lawmaker from the House of Representatives (DPR) claimed yesterday that foreigners visiting Indonesia “need not worry” about articles criminalizing sex outside of marriage contained in the draft revision to Indonesia’s criminal code (RKUHP), highlighting that charges can only be made by immediate family members of those involved.
Teuku Taufiqulhadi, who is a member of the RKUHP working committee in the DPR, told reporters that he recently met with ambassadors from countries in the European Union and explained to them what the articles on extramarital sex entailed.
“They asked why the article on extramarital sex was included in the criminal code? Isn’t it a privacy matter? I explained that we have included this article from the perspective of Indonesia as a religious [country], and extramarital sex is immoral. For that, the act will be criminalized,” Teuku said, as quoted by Detik.
Under Article 417 of the current RKUHP, extramarital sex or adultery would be a crime punishable by up to one year in prison.
Teuku emphasized that the charges can only be made against the offending party by either the spouses, parents or children of those involved.
“So clearly, foreigners will not be charged under this article just because they are not husband and wife,” Teuku said.
Article 419 on cohabitation under the RKUHP also poses a concern for foreigners visiting Indonesia, as the article makes cohabitation (which the legislation defines as two people living together as man and wife outside of marriage) a criminal act that can be reported upon by third parties, including village heads, and punished by up to six months in prison.
Despite what seemed to have been the latest version of the RKUHP, according to a Detik report that quoted Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly last week, charges can only be made if the police received a report from either the parents or children of those involved.
“If a foreigner is accused of cohabitation in Bali, their parents must come, or their children, to report,” Yasonna was quoted as saying.
The articles on extramarital sex and cohabitation are merely two of many controversial articles in Indonesia’s RKUHP, a grave matter which has seen thousands of people, led by university students, rallying on the streets of cities across the country in protest of the bill.
Yesterday, hundreds of students held a peaceful rally in Denpasar to protest a number of issues that have troubled the country in recent months. It’s worth noting, however, that the RKUHP is just one of several matters that these university students in Indonesia are raising in their protests.
Among these are demands for the revocation of the recently revised law governing the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the arrest of parties responsible for the forest fires ravaging parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Indonesian police ramp up suspect search after IS-linked attack on chief security minister Wiranto
http://imgurl.me/images/2019/10/15/Wiranto-attack-22bacccaa4ce6458c.jpg
Indonesian police were searching for more suspects today after two militants from an Islamic State-linked terror group stabbed the chief security minister, as the politician recovered in hospital following emergency surgery.
Wiranto, a 72-year-old former army chief, was stabbed twice in the stomach as he left his vehicle in Pandeglang, West Java yesterday.
The assassination attempt comes shortly before President Joko Widodo begins his second term as leader of the Southeast Asian archipelago of 260 million people, the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation.
Yesterday, Jokowi ordered the national police and intelligence agency chiefs to pursue other suspects in the attack and the extremist network allegedly behind it.
“An attack like this should set off alarm bells for security personnel to increase their caution,” said Ridwan Habib, a terrorism researcher at the University of Indonesia.
Today, Wiranto was in hospital following surgery and reportedly recovering.
“I visited him earlier today. He could talk but still looked weak,” presidential chief of staff Moeldoko told AFP today.
“He remains in intensive care.”
A 31-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, reportedly a married couple, were arrested at the scene in Pandeglang.
They were later identified as members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an extremist organisation loyal to IS that was responsible for several previous attacks, including deadly suicide bombings at churches in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya last year.
The male suspect had reportedly been under surveillance by the intelligence agency in Indonesia, which has long struggled with extremist Islamist groups.
Some past attacks have been against police and other state symbols, but yesterday’s incident is thought to be the first known assassination attempt by JAD on an Indonesian politician.
Authorities routinely arrest suspected IS-loyal militants they claim were planning bomb and other attacks.
Three others — a local police chief and two aides — also suffered knife wounds in Thursday’s attack but authorities said they had non-life-threatening injuries.
Wiranto, the retired chief of the armed forces and a failed presidential candidate, was appointed to his post in 2016 and oversees several departments, including the foreign affairs and defence ministries.
A major figure in Indonesian politics, he has faced controversy over alleged human rights violations and allegations of crimes against humanity linked to Indonesia’s brutal occupation of East Timor.
In May, police said Wiranto and three other top officials were targeted in a failed assassination plot linked to deadly riots in Jakarta after Widodo’s re-election victory.
A group of six people — arrested before they could carry out the killings — hoped the killings would plunge the country into chaos, police said at the time.

Mother of Indonesian athlete alleges daughter forcibly sent home during SEA Games training because she was ‘no longer a virgin,’ Sports Ministry refutes rumors
274462
A female Indonesian athlete who was scheduled to compete in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines was allegedly sent home due to accusations that she is not a virgin.
The 17-year-old artistic gymnastics athlete, Shalfa Avrila Siani, was participating in a bootcamp to prepare for the upcoming SEA Games, when, in mid-November, she was expelled and forced to return home by her coach, who allegedly cited her not being a virgin as the reason.
Shalfa’s mother, Ayu Kurniawati, said the coach abruptly announced the decision without issuing an official letter, as reported by iNews.
Ayu reportedly took her daughter for a medical examination afterwards, and said the allegation was false as the doctor confirmed that Shalfa’s hymen was still intact. (Editor’s note: an intact hymen is not necessarily a sign of virginity and not all women bleed from their vagina the first time they have sex.)
“Her coach cast her aside just like that, without any letter, without any prior notice, just telling her to go home,” Ayu was quoted as saying yesterday.
“[They said] the reason is because my daughter often came back late at night and that she’s no longer a virgin. They said her hymen was torn as if she was raped.”
Ayu added that Shalfa was shocked and devastated after what transpired, and has since refused to go to school.
Imam Muklas, Shalfa’s family legal representative, said they have written to the President and the Youth and Sports Minister, contesting the outcome of the first medical examination that alleged Shalfa as having lost her virginity, according to a report from state news agency Antara.
News of Shalfa’s alleged expulsion due to her virginity status has spread like wildfire in the country, prompting an official response from the Youth and Sports Ministry.
An official from the ministry said today that they have been in touch with the Indonesian Gymnastics Association (Persani) regarding the issue, and confirmed that Shalfa had not been forcibly sent home by her coach, nor was the issue of her expulsion related to her virginity.
“The truth, according to Pak Indra [the trainer in East Java], was that the athlete had been sent home because she lacked discipline and focus, thus resulting in her declining performance, so they decided not to include her for SEA Games,” Gatot S. Dewa Broto, a secretary at the ministry, said in a statement.
Gatot reaffirmed that the ministry is looking into the issue, and will take firm action should they find truth in the allegations of a virginity check against Shalfa.
“That’s because, aside from this being a matter of privacy and dignity, it has nothing to do with her [athletic] achievements,” Gatot said.

Durian garden seeks to become Batam's new tourism icon
https://img9.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/28074/280746297e1f25767e78206e152a3c7b4b2eafbb.jpg
Tourists seeking to visit the city of Batam in Riau Islands now have a new destination to explore.
Fans of durian will especially enjoy going to the 18-hectare Citra Kebun Wisata (Citra Tourist Garden), which hosts more than 1,000 durian trees of various varieties, including musang king, ang he, jantung and kampung.
Other than durian, the garden is also home to guava, watermelon and cucumber trees.
After paying the entrance fee of Rp 15,000 (US$1.07) per adult and Rp 10,000 per child, tourists are allowed to freely explore the area. However those wanting to eat the fruits must pay extra depending on the type of fruit and amount. The musang king durian, for instance, is still known as the most expensive durian, with a price per kilogram between Rp 200,000 and Rp 300,000. Each durian fruit can reach up to 3 kilograms.
Citra Kebun Wisata manager Nina Sofiana recently told The Jakarta Post that the main target market for this destination was tourists from Singapore and Malaysia who enjoy durian but have never seen the actual trees.
"We cooperate with several tour and travel companies in Batam to promote this place and lure them here. Outside of domestic tourists, we are aiming to attract 10,000 foreign tourists from Singapore and Malaysia per month," said Nina.
The garden was soft launched in Dec. 7 and is expected to hold a grand opening event in 2020 while the management prepares more facilities, including villas and cottages to accommodate tourists who want to spend the night, as well as facilities to support outdoor activities.
"This is the first tourist garden concept in Batam. Hopefully it can become one of the city's favorite tourist destinations," said Nina.
The 18-hectare area was previously earmarked for a factory. However, as durian trees had already been planted on most of the land years ago, the new owner decided to turn it into a tourist garden.
Ali Ulai, the owner of Citra Kebun Wisata, said it cost Rp 50 billion to design the garden, including purchasing the land and supporting facilities such as road access.
"We want this area to become a natural tourist site. We don't want to change the surrounding environment," said Ali.
Animals that are legally permitted by the government to be maintained in such a site, such as deer and birds, will be brought to enliven the garden as well.
"We are currently consulting with related authorities regarding which animals are allowed to be maintained here [as we are interested in] creating a mini zoo concept," added Ali.
According to the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) head for Riau Islands, Andika Lim, almost 80 percent of foreign tourists who came to Batam as well as the province were residents of Singapore due to close proximity, reliable transportation and purchasing power.
"Even foreign tourists who we recorded as coming from other countries such as India and the United States, were usually permanent residents of Singapore," Andika said, adding that the garden offered something different as a natural tourist destination with durian as the highlight.
"We're confident that the target of attracting 10,000 foreign tourists per month to this place is reachable as it offers a new concept."
As a border area, Batam also welcomes repeat visitors who can come almost every week, especially to enjoy its local cuisine. "Local fruits are also popular among these foreign tourists," added Andika.
Andika said local investors who previously focused on other industries were now starting to invest their money in tourism. Ali Ulai, for instance, was previously known as a businessman in the shipyard industry.
"[Other than Ali Ulai], other [local investors] who have entered the tourism industry include managers of Kepri Coral and Abang island who offer diving tourism there," said Andika.
Tourism contributes Rp 200 billion per year to the Batam city budget, which is around Rp 2 trillion in total.

Indonesia says nothing to hide after no coronavirus cases detected
287511
JAKARTA: Indonesia is not hiding anything over the coronavirus, the health minister said on Tuesday (Feb 11), after some medical researchers expressed concern that cases may have gone undetected in the world's fourth most populous country.
While the virus has quickly spread from China throughout much of the rest of the region and beyond, the sprawling Southeast Asian country of more than 260 million people has not recorded any cases so far.
Dozens of cases have been recorded in other regional countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, where one person has died, raising suspicions on social media in particular over a potential lack of vigilance in Indonesia.
287512
Researchers at the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health, in the United States, then said in a study last week that Indonesia should rapidly strengthen outbreak surveillance and control - especially given that it had direct flights from the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus.
The Harvard team said that Indonesia's lack of confirmed cases "may suggest the potential for undetected cases" as air travel may contribute to cases being exported from China.
The virus has killed over 1,000, with more than 42,000 confirmed cases in China and 319 cases in 24 other countries. Many of the cases outside China have been in people who have a history of travelling to the country.
"We have the kits to check coronavirus and they're certified ... Nothing is concealed," Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said after a cabinet meeting at the Bogor presidential palace outside Jakarta, in response to the concerns.
Indonesia has tested 64 samples from suspected coronavirus infections - 62 of which were declared negative with two still being tested, health ministry Research and development agency head Siswanto said during a tour of its laboratory in Jakarta.
Navaratnasamy Paranietharan, the WHO's Indonesia representative, told a conference on Tuesday: "Indonesia has taken concrete measures and the World Health Organization is quite confident that Indonesia is ready to be able to respond to this situation."
Indonesia has barred entry to visitors who have been in China for 14 days and stopped all flights to and from there.
Vivi Setiawaty, another health ministry official, said it was unclear why Indonesia had not seen any cases but said authorities were better prepared since facing H5N1 avian influenza from 2005.
"We remain cautious," she told reporters.
Indonesia has readied 100 hospitals across the archipelago including three in Jakarta and has also quarantined more than 240 of its citizens evacuated from Hubei province, home to Wuhan, to the island of Natuna, north of Borneo.
The WHO's Paranietharan said it appeared unlikely, as some have suggested, that the hot tropical climate could be a factor in curbing cases though more data would be required to be sure.
"It doesn't make sense at this point whether that could be the reason why we don't have coronavirus cases in Indonesia," Paranietharan said.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo said on Monday two Indonesians had tested positive for coronavirus after being in contact with an infected Japanese national, marking the first confirmed cases in the world's fourth most populous country.
The two had been hospitalized in Jakarta, Widodo told reporters at the presidential palace in the capital.
The president said a 64-year-old woman and her 31-year-old daughter had tested positive after being in contact with a Japanese national who lived in Malaysia and had tested positive after returning from a trip to Indonesia.
Widodo said an Indonesian medical team had traced the movements of the Japanese visitor before uncovering the cases.
"After checks, they were in a sick state. This morning I got a report that the mother and the daughter tested positive for coronavirus," said Widodo, who said they were being treated at Jakarta's Sulianti Saroso infectious diseases hospital.
Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto told reporters the Japanese visitor was a friend of the two women's family and had visited their house. He said authorities were checking who else the Japanese visitor may have come into contact with.
The confirmation of the first cases of coronavirus came after authorities had defended their screening processes, with some medical experts raising concerns of a lack of vigilance and a risk of undetected cases in the Southeast Asian country of more than 260 million people.

Indonesia scrambles to contain coronavirus as most hospitals not ready
294434
The government announced three new deaths and 35 new COVID-19 cases, including two toddlers, on Friday as it scrambles to contain community spread and get referral hospitals ready to face the pandemic. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the government had established a “fast-response” team, led by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
Under the coordination of the BNPB, the Health Ministry, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police, the team was tasked with, among other things, spearheading the measures to trace the movement of COVID-19 patients and those who had come in contact with them.
"We know that this virus spreads rapidly. Thus we should carry out prevention and mitigation efforts simultaneously," Jokowi said on Friday, "The government has and will continue to carry out tracing of contacts in this case."
The fast-response team is also responsible for handling surveillance and isolation of suspected COVID-19 patients and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective containment measures to curb possible wider contagion, including at the country's airports and sea ports.
294437
Jokowi reiterated that the government had prepared 132 referral hospitals across the country. “The Health Minister said there were 132 referral hospitals, from 100 previously. We will add more: 108 TNI hospitals, 53 hospitals under the National Police and 64 hospitals under state-owned enterprises,” he said.
A leaked document obtained by The Jakarta Post on Friday, however, showed that out of the list of 132 hospitals, only 49 were “ready”. The document is the minutes of a meeting between several institutions including the BNPB, Health Ministry, Executive Office of the President and the offices of the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister and Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister on March 10.
BNPB head Doni Monardo did not confirm the information in the document to the Post, nor did he deny the content.
A source who requested anonymity told the Post that in the meeting it was revealed that out of 132 hospitals designated as referral facilities “only 49 hospitals are really ready” for COVID-19, while the other 83 were in the “preparation stage”.
Some referral hospitals for COVID-19 in West Java have reported a lack of protective gear for medical personnel who handle patients suspected of having been infected with the virus.
Eight out of 52 hospitals in the province have been appointed as referral hospitals for COVID-19 patients, including Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung – the largest hospital in the province – and Dr. Slamet Hospital in Garut.
West Java Health Agency head Berli Hamdani Gelung Sakti said the medical team at Dr. Slamet Hospital had to transfer a patient because of a lack of protective gear, although the hospital had an adequate isolation room and other medical equipment.
"The Health Ministry responded by saying it was ready to supply all the necessary protective gear requested by the referral hospitals. We are still calculating whether we have sufficient equipment [to handle COVID-19 cases],” Berli told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
The agency head said he hoped the ministry could send protective gear soon to COVID-19 referral hospitals across the province because the isolation room at Hasan Sadikin Hospital was full.
Raden Rara Diah Handayani, a pulmonologist at Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta, one of the referral hospitals, said that when COVID-19 patients suffered from light pneumonia they could be cured faster. However, when they have developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), that means the patient's lungs are already infected, causing respiratory failure, then they really need the ventilators to breathe.
“And now the hospitals treating the confirmed cases of COVID-19 are facing a crisis because ventilators are expensive, but we really need this technology and equipment. This is what we are thinking right now, hospitals need more ventilators and [isolation] rooms,” Diah said in a discussion on Wednesday.
“And we don’t only need the equipment but also the human resources. We need medical workers who are experienced and understand infection control,” she added.
She also said the government must pay attention and protect the medical workers treating COVID-19 patients.
“This disease is highly contagious. We must not only save the sick ones but also the healthy ones. We need healthy medical workers. They must be equipped with a protective suit when they treat patients. We must protect them because medical workers are the front line in this fight against the disease,” she said.
In West Java, due to the limited availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hazmat suits, medical personnel of a public hospital in Tasikmalaya, West Java were forced to wear thin plastic raincoats, costing Rp 10,000 (70 US cents) apiece, when transporting patients under observation for COVID-19.
“Yes, it’s true that our staff were wearing just raincoats,” Tasikmalaya Health Agency head Uus Supangat said on Wednesday as reported by tribunnews.com. “The city [administration] bought 100 plastic raincoats at the store for a total of Rp 1 million.”
Some of the main referral hospitals have also reported that they have only a few isolation rooms. With growing numbers of positive patients, Sulianti Saroso Infectious Diseases Hospital (RSPI Sulianti Saroso) in North Jakarta, for example, only has 11 isolation rooms for COVID-19 patients.)
On Friday, Jokowi also stated that they were going to immediately finish the construction of a health facility specializing in treating COVID-19 patients on Galang Island in Batam, Riau Islands.
However, the plan to build a health facility in Galang was criticized by epidemiology experts.
Syahrizal Syarief, an epidemiology expert at the University of Indonesia, said building a new hospital would be a waste of money that would have been better allocated for ventilators and protective suits for medical workers.
“That’s also what we really need right now. I hope the government think thoroughly when they make policies like this,” he said.

Indonesian minister tests positive for coronavirus
294650
Indonesia's transport minister is in intensive care after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, an official said Saturday, as schools and tourist attractions were ordered to close over the health threat.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi was receiving treatment at an army hospital in Jakarta, according to State Secretary Pratikno.
A hospital spokesman said Sumadi was encountering difficulty breathing but that his condition was improving.
Pratikno said Sumadi was involved in virus mitigation efforts, particularly the evacuation of Indonesians from epicenters of the outbreak, and that President Joko Widodo had called for tests to be carried out on other ministers.
Cases of the virus in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, have jumped from zero two weeks ago to 96, with five deaths, according to government spokesperson Achmad Yurianto.
He also said the virus has spread outside Greater Jakarta to Bandung in West Java, Solo in Central Java, Manado in North Sulawesi, Pontianak in West Kalimantan, as well as holiday havens Yogyakarta and Bali.
Following the increase, the government on Saturday established a task force on COVID-19 mitigation.
Jakarta's Governor Anies Baswedan announced that schools would close for two weeks starting Monday, and ordered the closure of city-owned tourist attractions, such as Ragunan Zoo and Ancol beach.
He emphasized that Jakarta would not be locked down but urged people "to be responsible" and called for social distancing when possible.
Similarly, the administration of Solo, Central Java, Friday announced that schools and tourist attractions would close after a coronavirus patient died in the region.
The World Health Organization has said it is particularly concerned about high-risk nations with weaker health systems, which who may lack the facilities to identify cases.
A day after declaring the coronavirus outbreak to be pandemic this week, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called Indonesia's president Widodo and both agreed to "scale up cooperation."

The world now (e.g. Italy) is having shortage of ventilators which is a critical equipment for those with respiratory issues due covid19. IF Singapore have 1000 of such equipment and all use up by cfm cases+other non-related emergency cases, the 1001 case onward will not have it and they may end up dying.
Sadly, when that happen... DR will need to make a determination who/which cfm case is more likely to survive or worth to save. :( Save old man or a young man? Save the rich man or the poor man? Save the hiso or normal?
Singapore medical facilities have its limits, thats why with many imported case, now sg ban all incoming visitors because need to prepare for worst case scenarios.
Yes, which i think is a good move. Hopefully, i can also reduce the number of cases as time goes by

'We are worried,' say Indonesian healthcare workers as COVID-19 takes toll on medical system
296672
JAKARTA: On Saturday (Mar 21), Dr Djoko Judodjoko breathed his last in a Jakarta hospital.
The 70-year-old, who had underlying health conditions, was treated for COVID-19 earlier.
He was one of the seven doctors nationwide who contracted coronavirus and eventually passed away, according to the Indonesian Medical Association. More than 40 healthcare workers are currently being treated for COVID-19.
Dr Judodjoko's brother-in-law, Dr Pandu Riono, tweeted: “Farewell brother Koko. Forgive me for not being able to push the government under @jokowi to seriously overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. You’re infected when in active service. Many health workers have been infected and left. The (excuse) of lack of PPE (personal protective equipment) is not forgivable.”
“It’s not enough to talk, we need to act,” the public health expert from the University of Indonesia wrote.
The number of COVID-19 cases involving healthcare workers has led their colleagues across the country to be more vigilant, while appealing for urgent measures to be taken to safeguard them.
“These are not just numbers, not just statistics. These are human beings,” Dr Riono told CNA.
In another interview with CNA, nurse Siswanto, who goes by one name, said he is concerned about the deaths among COVID-19 medical workers.
“I am worried ... The local government must provide the nurses with full personal protective equipment," he said.
He is with Gunung Jati hospital in Cirebon, West Java. The hospital has so far treated two COVID-19 patients, one of which passed away while the other has been discharged.
In Malang city, East Java, the head of tropical and infectious disease at Dr Saiful Anwar Hospital shared similar sentiments.
“Doctors and nurses are at a very high risk of contracting the disease, so protection, especially PPE needs to be the main priority,” Dr Didi Candradikusuma told CNA.
In an earlier interview, the doctor told CNA that general equipment at the hospital like gloves and masks should be sufficient for the next four months. However, he now says there is a shortage due to a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases.
“The amount is not enough because the demand is high and we’re running out of supplies.
“So donations should be given in the form of PPE or medical equipment instead of money,” he added.
At the moment, the Dr Saiful Anwar Hospital is handling three COVID-19 patients.
Meanwhile, in Jakarta, referral hospital Persahabatan has called for all medical teams in the archipelago to be extra vigilant and maintain personal health, as four doctors who were treated at the hospital have died.
“The patients were professional health practitioners, so we as health workers must be vigilant,” managing director of Persahabatan Hospital Rita Rogayah said on Monday.
Dr Siti Pratiekauri, who works at another Jakarta COVID-19 referral hospital Sulianti Saroso, said the medical professionals are experiencing emotional ups and downs but they try to support each other. She is responsible for training healthcare workers to deal with the virus.
“The government should support us and pay attention to us.
“We are very happy that people think of us by giving donations, PPE … and wreaths with words of encouragement supporting us. This helps us mentally,” Dr Pratiekauri said.
On Monday, President Joko Widodo sent his condolences to the medical workers who have passed away. He also said that 300 million rupiah (US$18,622) will be disbursed as compensation money for each healthcare worker death. This will be given in regions that have announced a state of emergency.
Mr Widodo also announced that specialist doctors, general practitioners, dentists, midwives and nurses, as well as other medical workers will each be given a monthly incentive. This will range from 5 million rupiah to 15 million rupiah.
Across the country, COVID-19 cases have reached 709 as of Wednesday, with 58 deaths.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT LACKING
Apart from the seven doctors, the Indonesian Medical Association also recorded that a doctor who was part of a regional COVID-19 task force has died of a heart attack and apparent fatigue.
The association is looking into the causes of all the deaths, and is highlighting what it says is a bigger problem.
“The problem at the moment is that many of our colleagues need to be isolated because they have come into contact with COVID-19 patients and have complained about symptoms (of COVID-19).
“We’ve received this report from colleagues in Jakarta, Surabaya and Malang,” Dr Mohammad Adib Khumaidi, deputy head of the Indonesian Medical Association said.
The reason for this is the lack of PPE, he added.
The Jakarta government indicated that at least 44 health workers in the capital have been infected by COVID-19 as of Tuesday.
296676
“One thing for sure, given the current situation, they (the health workers) have no option than to treat the patients without full personal protective equipment,” Dr Khumaidi stated.
Dr Pratiekauri of Sulianti Saroso added: “We’re running out of PPE stock. We’ll be out of supply this week. We try to get it from here and there but the thing is, we’re competing against other hospitals."
Indonesia on Monday received a batch of PPE from China, and has started to distribute them across the archipelago, but Dr Pratiekauri said it is not enough.
“We’ve received 1,500 hazmat suits but that will be gone in five days,” she said adding that they especially need masks, thermometers and shoe protectors.
Dr Riono, the brother-in-law of the late Dr Judodjoko, said the lack of PPE is one of the reasons why medical workers lost their lives in the battle against COVID-19.
SOME HEALTHCARE WORKERS WHO DIED WERE NOT TREATING COVID-19 PATIENTS
He said Dr Judodjoko was, in fact, not treating COVID-19 cases.
He opined that every health facility personnel, including doctors who operate their own private practice, should have been educated that they were likely serving people who had already been infected.
“They should have been given personal protective equipment. Many doctors were not aware, they thought they were handling normal patients who had complaints but what happened was they (the patients) were infecting the doctors.
"That’s why in the first few months, many health workers will be infected,” he said.
Separately, a nurse who works at the same hospital as one of the doctors who died also said the 34-year-old doctor was not tending to COVID-19 patients.
The hospital is wondering how he could have gotten infected, said the nurse who declined to be named.
Dr Riono noted: “What now is happening is that many people in Indonesia have already been infected but do not yet know because there are limited testing kits." Close to 800 people have tested positive in Indonesia.
The public health expert added: "Protection to the health workers is number one. Don’t bother thinking about incentives, they don’t work for money … they work because it is their calling."
He said if Indonesia has problems with PPE supply, it could produce them domestically.
Dr Moewardi hospital in Solo told CNA they have been producing their own hazmat suits for the last few days as they couldn't buy them anywhere.
Regardless of the tough situation, Mr Siswanto, the nurse said there is something everyone can do.
“The community (at large) has to follow the government's regulations and obey social distancing.”

Face masks a must in public places, says Indonesia’s COVID-19 rapid-response team
298441
To help flatten the COVID-19 curve, the government is now urging people to wear face masks whenever they are out in public.
The new recommendation is an update from the previous guidelines and is in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) latest recommendation. Previously, Indonesia complied with the WHO’s recommendations that face masks only be worn by medical professionals and sick people in order to prevent a supply shortage.
"The President has asked us to make guidelines on face masks in accordance with the World Health Organization's advice,” head of Indonesia’s COVID-19 rapid response task force, Doni Monardo, told an online press conference on Monday.
“Previously, the WHO advised that only sick people should wear face masks but now it recommends that everyone wear face masks, especially in public places," he added.
However, Doni explained that only healthcare providers and other medical professionals working on the front line needed to wear medical-grade masks, such as surgical masks and N95 masks.
"The public can wear cloth masks, or masks made from other materials, as long as they can prevent the spread of saliva droplets when speaking," he added.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the government was preparing face masks for future public distribution.
"I've ordered [my administration] to prepare for the distribution of face masks to the public because we’re planning to require everyone who leaves their homes to wear a mask, in accordance with the WHO recommendations,” he said on Monday.
Doni said that medical-grade masks would still only be distributed to healthcare providers.
"For the public, the President has asked regional leaders to ramp up production of cloth masks through small and medium enterprises. This will help to fulfill [the regions’] need for masks, so they won’t depend on the central government," Doni said.
According to livescience.com, asymptomatic people can still spread COVID-19, with the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finding that up to 25 percent of people who contract the virus may not show symptoms.
A new small study also found that COVID-19 may be most infectious when symptoms are mildest. This new evidence indicates the virus can spread between people who interact in close proximity such as when speaking and when someone coughs or sneezes.

COVID-19: Red tape prevents laid-off, poor Indonesians from getting promised aid
302730
JAKARTA: For days, Mawarni had been trying to apply for the government’s pre-employment card programme, which would allow her to get a benefit worth 3.5 million rupiah (US$215) over a four-month period.
“It is not a lot of money,” the 46-year-old mother of three told CNA. “It won’t be enough to put food on the table and pay my house rent.”
But with the COVID-19 outbreak forcing companies and businesses to lay off hundreds of thousands of workers in Jakarta, Mawarni - who like many Indonesians goes with one name - could use all the help she can get.
The programme was part of President Joko Widodo’s campaign promises when he was re-elected last year to stem unemployment. It was originally designed to provide training for recent graduates and the unemployed.
But the president, popularly known as Jokowi, shifted the programme’s focus on Mar 31, less than two weeks after it was launched, to aid those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
Since the programme was new, the government only started accepting applications on Apr 11 through a dedicated website.
This was bad news for Mawarni, a cook who was forced to take an unpaid leave when the restaurant where she worked closed its doors on Mar 24. She does not own a computer and her West Jakarta house has poor mobile data reception.
302738
“I had to walk up to the main road to get good Internet on my phone,” she bemoaned, adding that due to her being “technologically challenged”, she had to take her 16-year-old daughter along to help her with the process.
“I didn’t even have an email until now,” Mdm Mawarni said. “My daughter had to set up an email account for me because you need an email to register.”
The woman described her experience of trying to apply through the website as “frustrating”, adding that there were moments when she could not even open the website.
Even though she could access the website, she could not made it past the sign up page because the activation link was never sent to her email.
Mawarni said she was finally able to log in last Wednesday (Apr 15) and spent 30 minutes filling the form.
But even after spending so much time, effort and mobile data, it would likely take a while before she finally gets the cash aid promised.
COMPLICATED BUREAUCRACY
The programme’s spokesman Panji Winanteya Ruky told CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday that his office would have to consult the Ministry of Manpower and the Ministry of Social Affairs to verify the applications.
“Applicants must pass the verification process and a competence test, where they will be judged based on their age, education level and other factors. We will then look at the data provided by the Ministry of Manpower and give priority to workers and businesses identified as being impacted by COVID-19,” he said.
“We will also check against the Ministry for Social Affairs database. We will prioritise those who haven’t received any social aid yet.”
The aid promised does not come solely in the form of cash handouts, according to the programme’s executive director Denni Purbasari in a press conference organised by the COVID-19 task force last Tuesday.
Purbasari said the programme was initially about providing skills and training to the unemployed, therefore 1 million rupiah of the 3.5 million rupiah pledged to each beneficiary would come in the form of online courses and classes.
“We have over 900 online classes available. With each class costing 200,000 rupiah, beneficiaries get to take five classes,” she said.
“After completing the courses, then we will start disbursing 600,000 rupiah every month for four months to a beneficiary’s bank account or (digital wallet apps) OVO or GoPay.”
EFFECTIVENESS QUESTIONED
Jokowi said on Mar 31 that the government would use three different existing programmes to aid people whose income are affected by the pandemic.
Aside from the pre-employment card programme, there are also the family hope programme - designed to help 10 million underprivileged pregnant women, infants and disabled - and the basic necessities card programme - designed to help 20 million poor families with subsidised food and goods.
However, Jokowi appeared to be banking on the newly rolled-out pre-employment card programme as his main tool to weather the economic impact COVID-19 had on millions of Indonesians.
He said the government has earmarked 20 trillion rupiah for the pre-employment card programme, adding that it would benefit 5.6 million people “primarily informal workers and micro and small businesses affected by COVID-19”.
But in practice, the programme is prioritising workers and businesses identified by the Ministry of Manpower which only keeps track of the formal sector, as explained by the programme's persons in-charge earlier.
According to the Indonesian Statistics Agency, there are more than 55 million workers in the informal sector across the country.
“Even before COVID-19, the government has been criticised for being slow to distribute their aid programmes and fail to ensure that the aid is distributed to the right people,” Bhima Yudhistira Adhinegara, an economist from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance told CNA.
The decision to make the pre-employment card programme the go-to policy seems to be out of place, he said.
“The programme was designed to improve the skills of the unemployed at a time the economy was growing 5 per cent. During a time of crisis, people don’t need training, they need to eat,” he said.
The government also has to make sure the other two programmes can effectively mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19, Adhinegara added.
The government has raised the number of beneficiaries for the family hope programme and the basic necessities card programme by 30 per cent. The amount of benefits for both was also increased by 25 per cent.
“The government has a lot of catching up to do in determining who these added beneficiaries are,” Adhinegara said. “ With limited budget, the government wants to be careful with the verification process but in so doing slows down the aid distribution.”
And the amount of benefits people stand to make are also relatively small, said Adhinegara.
The family hope programme provides each beneficiary of between 2.4 million to 3 million rupiah a year, while the basic necessities card programme only hands out 1.8 million rupiah worth of goods over a maximum period of nine months.
According to the Jakarta Manpower Agency, as of last week more than 50,000 workers have been laid off and 270,000 more have been forced to take unpaid leave.
UNCERTAIN TIMES
Siti Patonah, a housewife whose delivery worker husband has been forced to take unpaid leave, said she is unsure whether the government would help her family.
In the eyes of the Jakarta Education Agency, her family is considered poor. Her nine-year-old daughter was allocated a cash aid of 250,000 rupiah a month to buy uniforms, books and stationery.
But she does not know whether the agencies in-charge of the three programmes agree. “I don’t harbour much hope,” she said.
The government has also promised to provide free electricity to 24 million homes and relax loan requirements, debt collections and late payment penalties for motorcycle taxi riders and micro as well as small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).
302734
Igun Wicaksono, chairman of the Indonesian motorcycle taxi rider association (GARDA), said in practice things were not as smooth.
“The free electricity is only for those who are already under the electricity subsidy programme, not for those who recently loss their income like us,” Wicaksono, whose income has dropped by 80 per cent because of the pandemic.
“We barely make enough money to feed ourselves and buy fuel. We can’t pay our motorcycle loan but the creditors insisted that we should at least pay half of our instalment despite the government saying we don’t have to.”
Meanwhile, state-owned oil company Pertamina has promised to provide a 50 per cent discount to all motorcycle taxi riders.
But Wicaksono said many of his peers were disappointed to discover later that the discount only applies to non-subsidised types of fuel which can cost one-and-a-half times more than the subsidised fuel.
With Jakarta and its surrounding suburbs banning motorcycle taxi riders from taking passengers, life has been difficult for motorcycle taxi riders, who can now only make deliveries.
“And it will be more difficult. More and more laid off workers are now switching profession to become motorcycle taxi riders so competition will be stiffer,” he said.
“That’s why many of us have also applied for the cash aid programmes. But we are worried that there would be more bureaucracy before we finally receive cash. Meanwhile, we still have mouths to feed and bills to pay.”

100-year-old Indonesian woman beats coronavirus
A 100-year-old Indonesian woman has recovered from coronavirus, making her the country's oldest survivor of the deadly respiratory illness.
Kamtim, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was discharged from hospital this week after a month of treatment in her hometown Surabaya, Indonesia's second-biggest city, officials said.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said she hoped Kamtim's story would give a boost to at-risk residents -- the illness is especially dangerous for older people and those with chronic conditions.
"I hope her recovery can motivate elderly people during the pandemic," Parawansa added.
Born in 1920, Kamtim was taken to hospital last month after showing symptoms and she was later confirmed to have contracted the virus.
Siti Aminah, the woman's daughter-in-law, chalked up her recovery to "discipline and persistence".
"Every day I checked her condition with nurses and they always told me that she was very strong and diligent about taking her medicine," Aminah told AFP.
"She was very motivated to get better."
It was not clear how the home-bound woman contracted the virus.
"She probably got it when people from the neighbourhood came around to visit since she never goes outside," Aminah said.
Indonesia has confirmed more than 26,000 cases of coronavirus and 1,613 deaths.
But the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago of more than 260 million has among the lowest testing rates in the world.
Researchers estimate the true number of virus infections and fatalities is several times the official toll.

315952
The Health Ministry has announced that 82 people died of COVID-19 on Sunday, the highest reported death toll in a day so far since the outbreak in the country started, bringing the official death toll up to 3,171.
The previous highest daily death toll was recorded on Tuesday, when 71 people reportedly died of the disease.
“If we see the number of deaths nationwide, we are currently have [a mortality rate of] 5 percent. This is relatively high compared to the global average, which is currently at 4,72 percent,” the ministry’s disease control and prevention director general, Achmad Yurianto, said on Sunday.
Along with South Sulawesi, East Java reported the highest number of fatalities on Sunday with 24 deaths. Central Java province followed with 15 deaths.
East Java remains the province with the highest number of COVID-19 deaths with 1,020 deaths, far surpassing second-place Jakarta, which has recorded 649 deaths.
With 63,749 confirmed COVID-19 cases and a total of 3,171 deaths as of Sunday, Indonesia remains the country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases and the highest death toll in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia virus cases pass 100,000 under 'new normal' policy
319636
Indonesia confirmed its 100,000th coronavirus case on Monday as the Red Cross warned that the health crisis in the world's fourth most populous country risked "spiralling out of control".
The vast archipelago -- home to more than a quarter of a billion people -- has been recording 1,000-plus new infections daily after relaxing movement restrictions this month in a bid to head off a collapse of Southeast Asia's biggest economy.
As of Monday, Indonesia had reported a total of 100,303 COVID-19 cases and 4,838 deaths. But with some of the world's lowest testing rates, the true scale of its toll is widely believed to be much greater.
Dozens of frontline doctors have succumbed to the deadly respiratory disease while health officials have warned that hundreds of children may have also died from it -- as many suspected virus victims are buried without testing.
The country of nearly 270 million is among the worst hit in Asia by the pandemic, with cases in all of its 34 provinces, including the remote Maluku islands and easternmost Papua.
There have been protests against distancing rules and even testing in parts of the country, including the holiday island Bali.
And critics have slammed widespread signs of Indonesians becoming less vigilant under the government's so-called "new normal" policy.
They point to re-opening offices in the capital Jakarta as a major culprit in the surge, while restaurants, shopping malls and tourist attractions are also swinging open their doors around the country.
"We are intensifying our efforts to educate the public about the importance of changing their behaviour for good by physical distancing, wearing masks and practising good hygiene," the Indonesian Red Cross said Monday, adding that it has enlisted some 7,000 volunteers nationwide.
"This calls for a unified, unprecedented, large-scale effort to reach all parts of society, in every corner of our country," it added.
President Joko Widodo has called for higher testing rates and a tougher response, including threats to reshuffle his cabinet if ministers don't do a better job at fighting the crisis.
But his government has cancelled a daily COVID-19 press briefing that was seen as crucial for informing the public and questioning its handling of the outbreak.
Widodo, better known as Jokowi, has also been criticised for a slow response to the crisis and earlier comments that he feared making information about the virus public would spark widespread panic among the huge population.
Indonesia reported its first confirmed virus case in March.
"The 100,000 cases today should alert the government that it has to be more serious in handling the pandemic," said Indonesian Doctors' Association spokesman Halik Malik.
"People have become less vigilant in recent months because of the government's narrative about the 'new normal'.
"It's misleading and could prompt people to think the virus is under control but, in fact, it's not."

Indonesia's handling of COVID-19 pandemic unsuccessful: Epidemiologist
323814
SHARES Indonesia's response to the COVID-19 outbreak has not been successful, an epidemiologist from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Bayu Satria Wiratama, has said. "Indonesia has been unsuccessful [in handling the pandemic]," Bayu told kompas.com on Sunday. He said there were two main factors that led to this conclusion: a lack of discipline in following health protocols among government officials and a failure to improve testing capacity.
"Despite the government continuously urging the public to wear masks, maintain physical distance and wash hands frequently, many government-organized events failed to implement such protocols," Bayu said. This situation, he added, set a bad example for the public, causing many to ignore health protocols. He said it was important for the government to deliver a consistent message to the public by setting a good example. "The President or any government officials should not be seen taking pictures or talking without masks," he said.
Besides the lack of discipline, Bayu also believed the government had failed to improve testing capacity, patient quarantine measures and contact tracing. "Previously, the government said that it would increase its testing capacity to 10,000 per day, but to this day it has not been able to meet that target," he said. "Singapore for instance had successfully put COVID-19 under control by conducting massive and quick testing and tracing. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the government has done little contact tracing for each confirmed case," he added. Considering the current situation, Bayu said, the pandemic might only be over after most residents contract the disease and develop immunity, unless the government finds a vaccine for the coronavirus. "Seeing the government's current [COVID-19] response, our hopes now lay on vaccine development," he said.
