I think the trouble with Sinkaporeans is that expectations have risen along with salaries and the good socio-economic conditions. The generation of women now in their 20s and 30s have lived a good life if they were from middle class families...probably got sent to school in car every day, no problems with food etc, when they graduated most managed to get a job with decent salary and no worries about the future.
But this has spoiled them. If hubby cannot provide 30K wedding dinner, 5K photoshoot, 6K diamond ring, 10K honeymoon, 70K japanese car and
700-800K condo, then no room for discussion. Lanchiao.

What many people don't realize is that this is ridiculous. Sinkies play this foolish game of keeping up with the joneses and did not manage their expectations. For those people who are not in the hotshot jobs earning $10-20+K a month, this kind of lifestyle is the path to self-destruction. Think 30 year loan for the condo and 7 year loan for the car.

The irony is, many Sinkie bros have spoiled the market for each other. Lets not talk about those 8/10 Premier League girls whom only the rich and handsome men can attain, lets talk about the average 5-6/10 SG girl. A friend of mine said that they have this terrible "beh kam gwaan" and "entitlement" mentality where they don't want to lose face to the prettier girls. So long as a girl has been liked by some guy or asked out before, she thinks she has a market. And some bros overbid and pull out all the stops to date women who are barely average in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. The best part is because of our developed society, girls who are CMI or too choosy can stay on the shelf because they earn 4K, 5K or some even 10-20K a mth. Can't find husband? Ok, have affair with a handsome man whose wife has let herself go, or ONS at Zouk, etc etc.

$1500 for household expenses alone is plenty (this assumes you've already deducted the rest like CPF etc and that this $1500 is all disposable income)
Some people earn LESS than that after CPF leh
In fact, one of my friends working in private sector said $5000 p.m. is not really alot in SG

$5000 minus $1000 CPF
$4000 minus close to $500 for income tax (8% i think)
$3500 minus phone bills, water and electricity bill, rent, food, soap, shampoo, razors etc not to mention misc. like replacing belts or shoes that have fallen apart, insurance, etc
It is a real challenge to save more than $2000 a mth, hence being able to afford $1500 on top of everything is quite tokkong
Don't forget you have to save for your retirement, your wife's retirement, some money to pay parents' medical bills, money for kid's university, etc etc

It takes a really frugal and disciplined approach to manage money in a materialistic society like SG.

But I think quite a few of us Sinkies have gotten addicted to the easy life; we eat out often, spend almost $20 per meal (even subway footlongs are almost $10 ) take cabs or buy a car, wife demands car of her own, etc etc

Thats why many Sinkie women have this "gimme" mentality. Best part, heard a friend's ex say... if i earn $4000, and you earn $4000, put together and we must share and split, I end up with less than my original $4000... then what for I marry you? So many of them take the easy way out...try to marry a Sinkie man who earns $15 000 -20 000 so can bao all the family expenses and let them lead a life of ease. Unfortunately not all SG girls who think like that are chioh enough to snag such a man, nor are there enough of such men to go around ... Chinese saying "You choose people, People choose you"

Well said well said....the crux of the question is actually not whether it is a prc girl or a local girl...but whether the girl truly loves you and can accept you for who you are...
