Re: Economy slowdown
Hi Kyser,
Not many companies are "blue" enough. Sembcorp should be ok, but cosco and wilmar are pretty new right? History of management and price stability might not be so clear for these stocks. For a period of time i was quite adamant abt finding blue chips companies...but it's a loose definition. Blue chips are simply companies which have long history of price stability, dividend payouts, large caps and good management...some say those in the STI should be considered blue chip companies...but then again, even STI components could change as it did recently. Anyone knows how to search for the local companies that pay dividends?

Re: Economy slowdown
I think economy slowdown is the best time to invest. Recently (2 months ag0), I did some investment myself with some spare cash that's been sitting in the bank earning miserable interest. The shares I bought were all US-based shares since the US dollar is weakening and the share price there also weakened. Meaning I can buy more with Sing dollar and that good companies are sold at a discount.
The online broking firm I use is optionsxpress. Allows me to trade in shares and options. I trade mainly in stock and ETF as options are a tad too complex for me now. I do value investing and not day trade. So far, my paper returns has been about +12%. I guess I cannot complain about the result since it's just 2 months. 5/6 trade I made had actually gained some ground (by PURE LUCK). Companies I purchased are recommended by GIC (what sillypore garment purchase, cannot be too far off since they employ so many skodas to research), Motley fool hidden gems, some green tech investment forum and better-investing.org. Of course, you need to make your own judgement about their recommendations. Not all of them can help you to "Tan Looi". The objective of my investment is to either have a 20% gain in 18 months or 100% gain in 5 years. Modest targets that I hope I can achieve. Glad to share info with anyone. It's free but definitely at your own risk. Cheers |
