HER husband never used condoms when having sex with a lounge hostess in China.
Yet, Jane (not her real name), 49, continued to have unprotected sex with him after he returned to Singapore.
This, despite her fears that he may give her HIV or sexually-transmitted diseases.
The reason: The family is financially dependent on him.
She said: 'I can't reject him when he wants sex or insist that he use a condom. What if he leaves the family?
'Two of my three sons are still in school and I have no savings.
'My oldest son just started working a couple of months ago and can contribute only $200 to the household.'
Jane, whose sons are aged 13 to 24, said her husband of 26 years had visited the other woman in China early last month.
He is planning another trip in November.
The housewife said: 'I find it so insulting, yet I'm helpless as I'm not financially independent.
'He said that if I give him his 'freedom', he will not leave the family.'
She said she had initially thought of filing for divorce.
But after consulting a lawyer recommended by a friend, she decided against it.
Jane said she felt that her poor O-level qualifications and age would be obstacles to finding a job that would allow her to support her two younger sons.
She said her husband earns about $4,000 a month and the family lives in an executive flat.
She said: 'My husband is not rich, what if he gives his money to the other woman and defaults on the monthly alimony?
'My sons will be the ones to suffer. At least, now, he still pays the household bills.
'If I'm alone, I don't need his support. I can protect myself.'
Jane said she knew that her husband, who is in the construction industry, had visited prostitutes when he travelled to Indonesia and Malaysia for work in the past.
But he claimed he had used condoms during sex then.
She said: 'He told me that even if he didn't want to, the prostitutes would insist that he use condoms.'
But things took on a dangerous turn in March when she discovered SMSes from a woman in China.
When she confronted her 49-year-old husband, he admitted to having an affair with a KTV lounge hostess while working in China from May to December last year.
It was only then that Jane found out he did not use a condom.
SCARED
She now fears getting HIV and sexually-transmitted infections because of her husband's latest, reckless behaviour.
Jane said her husband readily admitted to the affair when she confronted him.
She said: 'He said he is 'deeply in love' with the woman and there was no need to use condoms as she's 'clean'.
'He said that she is 'monogamous' even though she is still working in the KTV lounge.
'They had sex the second time they met, but he believes her when she tells him she doesn't 'entertain' other men.'
Under a proposed amendment to the Infectious Diseases Act, her husband would have broken the law by not telling her that he was at risk of contracting HIV or AIDS.
At present, only those who know that they are HIV-positive are compelled by law to inform their partners of the risk before sex.
NO ILLNESS, NO EVIDENCE
This is something that Jane is only too aware of.
She said: 'The law will take action only if I get HIV and he tests positive too because I'd then have evidence to go to court.
'But there are no preventive measures now. If I know he's having unprotected sex with multiple partners, the law won't do anything.'
Has she been tested for HIV or other sexually-transmitted infections?
Jane said she has thought about getting tested, but that it would 'only be fair' if her husband went as well.
