Former ManC goalkeeper Shay Given believes any accusations tat the club's financial clout has secured them the title will be without credit if they clinch tis year's Premier League crown.

But there r other fine buys, like Scott Parker, a nominee 4 the PFA Player of the Year award, & Jean Beausejour, a cause of Wigan's unexpected revival, who still do not figure in ESPN's top 10 buys.

10. Sergio Aguero (Manchester City, £38 million)
There r fewer excuses 4 failure when paying out huge fees, but ManC certainly chose wisely when signing Aguero. The Argentine has allied speed, skill & deadly finishing in a year where his class has been a constant. He is closing in on 30 goals & while all of City's other strikers can be faulted - Carlos Tevez & Mario Balotelli 4 their temperament, Edin Dzeko 4 his performances - Aguero could end the season as top scorer 4 the champions.

9. Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea, loan)
It is a problem many managers never experience but a loan signing who does 2 well can be troublesome. Sigurdsson's eye 4 goal may make it harder 4 Swansea 2 recruit the Icelander on a permanent contract. However, it has also taken City safely in2 mid-table & enabled them 2 add incision 2 their trademark passing game. And, like Newcastle, he is showing signs of peaking @ the business end of the season.

6. Michel Vorm (Swansea, £1.5 million)
A week b4 the start of the season, Swansea City still did not hv a goalkeeper 2 replace the departed Dorus de Vries. Then Vorm arrived, excelled on his debut @ Manchester City & the notion tat the newcomers would be the division's whipping boys started 2 look more unlikely. Arguably, the Dutchman was @ his best in the opening months of the campaign, helping Swansea acquire momentum. As a footballing 'keeper, he suits Swansea's style of play. As a penalty specialist, he ensures opponents cannot be 2 confident when they get a chance fr 12 yards.

5. James McClean (Sunderland, £350,000)
The mere mention of Steve Bruce's name can prompt criticism, but the 4mer manager has, albeit indirectly, played a significant role in Sunderland's revival under Martin O'Neill. 4 the 1st half of the season, it seemed the free-transfer acquisition of Sebastian Larsson was Bruce's best bit of business. But, while the Swede has continued 2 impress, he has been overshadowed by McClean. The Irishman debuted in O'Neill's 1st game - Bruce had parked him in the reserves 2 allow him 2 acclimatise 2 life @ Sunderland - & has meant tat left wing is no longer the Black Cats' problem position. Strong, direct & a fine crosser, he is worth many times the minuscule amount Bruce paid 4 him.

4. Craig Bellamy (Liverpool, free)
In its own way, Bellamy's success damns the former director of football Damien Comolli. While spending vast amounts on underachievers, Liverpool, without paying a fee, made 1 of the signings of the season. Bellamy is probably the best finisher @ Anfield, a fast, feisty force who can be deployed either on the left or as the central striker. His monumental performance against ManC took Liverpool 2 the Carling Cup final & his free kick led 2 Andy Carroll's FA Cup semi-final winner. He has been underused, but tat is not his fault.

3. Yakubu (Blackburn, £1.5 million)
It was no secret Yakubu was available. Loaned out 2 Leicester last season, unwanted @ Everton, the consensus was tat he was finished as a force in the Premier League. So his success tis season must rank as 1 of the strangest elements of Blackburn's surreal season. The Nigerian has been an ever-present in the top scorers' chart, & arguably none of his rivals has been quite as cool a finisher. His brace against ManU brought 1 of the year's shock results &, in the unlikely event Blackburn do survive, they will do so principally becos they fed 'the Yak' & he scored.

2. Papiss Demba Cisse (Newcastle, £9 million)
Such statistics r more meaningful aft a long career but, in Premier League history, no 1 has a better goal-per-minute ratio than Cisse. An extraordinary volley against Chelsea may be the Senegalese's best strike but a natural scorer is best measured by the total & significance of his goals. If they propel Newcastle in2 next season's Champions League, his £9 million fee will hv been repaid many times over. As it is, he is testament 2 the acumen of manager Alan Pardew & chief scout Graham Carr.

1. Demba Ba (Newcastle, free)
Cisse has taken over as Newcastle's finisher now, but it should not be forgotten tat Ba provided them with their initial impetus & tat he helped rebrand them as the cleverest operators in the transfer market. Aft the 2011 sales of Kevin Nolan & Andy Carroll, their 2 premier goalscorers, Newcastle had not spent a fee on a striker until Cisse's January arrival. Yet in the meantime, Ba's golden run of 15 goals in 15 games ensured Carroll was not missed & Pardew's side were a constant @ the upper end of the table.

Money is only actually a boon if used well, as many a football club has proved over the years. ESPNsoccernet's selection of the worst signings of the season cost the best part of £100 million & may now only be worth a fraction of tat. Most hv had a detrimental impact on their club's season; others hv barely featured in it. Some may come good over the course of their contract, but the majority probably won't. And as far as tis season is concerned, all r simply bad buys.

10. Charlie Adam (Liverpool, £7.5 million)
When assessing Charlie Adam's season, it is worth remembering Liverpool did not need 2 sign a central midfield passer. Adam was recruited in a summer in which they sold Raul Meireles & loaned out Alberto Aquilani. 9 months later, the Scot still seems best suited 2 Blackpool, 2 having a team built around him, rather than Liverpool, where he has struggled 2 dovetail with greater talents. The set-pieces SAF 1s described as being worth £10 million hv been a grave disappointment while the playmaker has struggled 2 dictate games. Though many of Liverpool's poorer results hv occurred in his absence, it is hard 2 claim they hv actually missed Adam.

9. Charles N'Zogbia (Aston Villa, £10 million)
While Stewart Downing may be mocked elsewhere, the Villa Park faithful could be forgiven 4 feeling nostalgic 4 the days he manned the flanks. His successor, Charles N'Zogbia, was brought in as a replacement 4 both Downing & Ashley Young & was Villa's marquee summer signing. A return of 2 goals & 3 assists all season is 1 sign he has failed; another is tat he has been on a bench otherwise populated by untried rookies while Villa hv had injury problems. The mercurial Frenchman has proved both unsuccessful in & unhappy with manager Alex McLeish's defensive brand of football.

8. Jordan Henderson (Liverpool, £16 million)
Normally, being a near ever-present is a sign a footballer has excelled. Yet no Liverpool player has made more appearances tis season than Jordan Henderson & he is no nearer 2 justifying an inflated fee tat could rise still further 2 £20 million. Of course, Henderson's price tag is not his fault but, despite occasional glimpses of talent, such a costly signing ought 2 deliver more. It hardly helps tat he has been played just off a sole striker & on the right wing, neither his best position.

7. Myles Anderson (Blackburn, free)
Not just a poor signing, but also a perplexing 1 as far as supporters were concerned. Steve Kean likened him 2 Chris Smalling when signing a player who made a solitary appearance 4 Aberdeen. Since then, Anderson has not played @ all 4 Blackburn. Neither, 4 tat matter, has full-back Bruno Ribeiro, described as a Brazilian Denis Irwin when recruited. Neither even got on the bench when Rovers had 5 defenders out injured, so why sign them?

6. Stefan Savic (Manchester City, £6 million)
If 1 game summed up Stefan Savic's season, it was surely the Carling Cup semi-final 2nd leg @ Anfield when he was hauled off @ half-time. The conclusion, then & all too often, appeared 2 be tat the Montenegrin is a liability, tat whatever talent he possesses, he is 2 callow & error-prone 2 be risked. He has not featured in the league since playing in the 1-0 loss 2 Swansea which, coincidentally or not, might hv been City's worst performance of the season & has appeared in a disproportionate number of their domestic defeats.

5. Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea, £18 million)
It can be easy 2 criticise the super-rich 4 spending money without really thinking things thru, but sometimes it is fair enough. Consider the case of Romelu Lukaku, who cost more than Swansea paid 4 their entire squad & has played a mere 83 minutes' Premier League football tis season. With a team happiest playing 1 out-&-out striker & in a squad tat also includes Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, Daniel Sturridge & Salomon Kalou - plus, 4 half a season, Nicolas Anelka - it was always hard 2 see where Lukaku would figure. As it is, the giant has been virtually invisible. Include Thibaut Courtois & Kevin de Bruyne, both out on loan, & Chelsea hv spent more than £30 million on Belgians who hv not played. They may prove astute long-term investments, but in the short term, they hv had a negligible impact.

4. Shaun Wright-Phillips (QPR, £2.5 million)
There is a temptation 2 choose Djibril Cisse, whose 5 QPR appearances hv brought 2 red cards, but @ least the temperamental Frenchman has contributed on the rare occasions he has managed 2 stay on the pitch. Shaun Wright-Phillips, on the other hand, has achieved virtually nothing, whether on the right, the left or playing just off the attack. While Jamie Mackie's recovery fr a badly-broken leg has been 1 of the more heartening stories of the season, it has had an added benefit 4 Rangers: it has enabled them 2 leave Wright-Phillips on the bench.

3. Stewart Downing (Liverpool, £20 million)
It beggars belief tat, aft 32 games, a £20 million winger still has not scored or created a goal in the Premier League tis season. Perhaps, in some ways, Stewart Downing epitomises Liverpool: by the law of averages, something surely shld hv gone in, even if it was the product of a mishit. Yet the damning statistics r not the only indications Downing has failed. He appears 2 lack both the mentality 2 play 4 Liverpool & the pace 2 get beyond defenders. Liverpool supporters who 1 2 depress themselves might ponder how such a huge sum could hv been better spent.

2. Scott Dann (Blackburn, £7.7 million)
Go back 2 last summer &d Scott Dann seemed a man in demand. Liverpool & Arsenal were allegedly interested, so it seemed a coup when Blackburn signed him @ the end of the transfer window. Now it looks another of the mistakes tat could cost Rovers their Premier League status. Secure in a well-drilled & rigorously-screened Birmingham back 4 last season, Dann has been exposed & embarrassed @ Ewood Park. Examine the many goals tat Blackburn hv conceded & all 2 often he is culpable. The ruptured testicle he suffered in December may hv seemed the most painful part of his season, but arguably his defending has caused more anguish.

1. Roger Johnson (Wolves, £7 million)
Wolves' relegation 2 the Championship is largely attributable to 2 disastrous decisions: 1stly, sacking Mick McCarthy & ending up with Terry Connor as his replacement &, 2ndly, the 4mer manager's move 2 make Roger Johnson his biggest buy & new captain. So reliable alongside Scott Dann @ Birmingham, they sit side by side again in tis list. But while Dann has been dreadful, Johnson has been worse. He has turned up drunk 4 training, almost come 2 blows on the field with team-mate Wayne Hennessey &, rather than improving the defence, has not even merited a place in it.

Aft a goalless 1st-half, Mancini brought on Nigel de Jong on 4 Samir Nasri, allowing Toure 2 move in2 a more advanced role. It proved 2 be a masterstroke, as the Ivorian played a 1-2 with Sergio Aguero b4 curling a 1st-time strike past a diving Krul.

Mancini knows tat a win @ the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the season will see the club lift their 1st title in 44 years, but is not underestimating the challenge of Mark Hughes' men who r still not safe fr relegation.

"We don't hv pressure. Leading up 2 the Newcastle game, maybe we had some. But not now," said Mancini. "We hv 2 fingers on the trophy. But it is not enough, becos we still hv 1 more game & it is a difficult 1.

The Trotters r currently in the drop zone, 2 points behind QPR, but can take solace in the knowledge tat a defeat 4 Hughes' men @ Eastlands coupled with a victory @ Stoke City will ensure a leapfrog. It is taken as read tat QPR will indeed come away pointless tis weekend - although, remember, tis has been a season of the surprise - while Bolton might hv the scent of drama on the cards in their nostrils as Stoke r finishing the season with a whimper. However, SAF has said he expects the new Premier League champions 2 pay out "stupid money & silly salaries" tis summer, & it appears Mancini expects further investment 2 be made.

"Barcelona & Real Madrid every year buy 2 or 3 players & spend alot of money," he told BBC Sport. "I think 4 ManC it will be the same. We need 2 improve. We need 2 hv the strength 2 play Champions League & Premier League."

It would appear tat any expenditure on improving the squad will not be offset by the departure of Carlos Tevez.

Sergio Aguero has crushed any speculation he may leave ManC tis summer, stating tat he is happy @ the club & tat the Premier League champions r on a par with Real Madrid & Barcelona.

The Argentinian forward, who scored the winner in City's 3-2 win over QPR which secured them the title, had been linked with a possible exit fr Eastlands with Spanish champions Real reported 2 be interested in mounting a bid.

His City team-mate Pablo Zabaleta recently said tat the club's Argentine trio, which also includes Carlos Tevez, were all happy & Aguero has now confirmed his desire 2 remain & build on his achievements by ruling out any move.

"I decide my future & if I say I stay, then I stay @ ManC," Aguero told Argentine radio station Rock&Closs. "I 1 2 continue here & I m happy."

As if 2 emphasis his commitment 2 City when asked abt the possibility of a move 2 a club such as Barcelona or Real Madrid in the future, Aguero responded: "City r on the same level as Madrid & Barca, & that's why I 1 2 stay & play in the Champions League here."

It has also been reported in Spain tat Aguero's City team-mate David Silva is a target of Real boss Jose Mourinho. Aguero said of his team-mate:" Playing with him is easy. He's a phenomenon."

Aguero, 23, enjoyed an impressive debut season @ City aft joining fr Atletico Madrid 4 £38 million as he scored 23 goals in 34 Premier League appearances 2 help the club 2 their 1st title since 1968.

ManC manager Roberto Mancini believes Robin van Persie is a more realistic transfer target than Edinson Cavani.

Mancini could look 2 bolster his frontline tis summer & has subsequently been linked with a swoop 4 Arsenal striker Van Persie, whose contract expires in the summer of 2013.

The Italian coach is also an admirer of Lazio's Cavani, but he accepts tat the Uruguay international would command a higher fee than his Dutch counterpart.

Wenger is playing minds games with Van Persie now, reminding him of the club's loyalty to RVP during his injury layoff and RVP should reciprocate by showing loyalty to the club now. I also think the chances of RVP coming to Man City is slim.
